We have come to the conclusion that in effect the choke is stuck on so its burning fuel like a petrol running on choke.

The only question is how to you turn it off on a Lucas pump? There is a black switch near the stop/idle lever but other than that we cant find anything.
It makes sense as ther eis power above 2k rev so it can be timing. its sometimes runs ok so not a major fault piston rings. Just cant find anyone who knows about Lucas pumps

There is no choke on diesels just a cold advance, which will advance the timming around 5 degrees when cold.

If stuck on would just give you more diesel knock and sound like a tranist. No smoke!
If stuck off would produce smoke while reaching operating temperature then it would clear.

You need to rethink. Need answeres some questions to diagnose otherwise it could be a million differnet things.

When does it smoke when hot or cold, or both?
Have you checked for air in the fuel lines?

Have you actually checked the pump timing? Has the timing belt been replaced on schedule?

Smoke all the time under 2k revs white smoke ok above hot or cold makes no difference. All pipes checked, timing belt replaced 18 months ago(show the guy said when we bought it)
Sometimes it runs ok we went from Crewe to Alsager perfect the other day, It ticked over for 10 mins perfect the other day this is why I think it must be some silly thing sticking if it was timing it would do it all the time.
Its just like its getting to much fuel as it cant tell its not revving so doesnt turn down the fuel sometimes you can blip the peddle and it goes ok again.

We have had it to 4 garages and everyone is stuck short of replacing pump cam belt etc. We know the pump has been boosted as its 121 bhp stage one tuned but on a lucas you cant change it very easy not like a bosh. Its what the black switch with a gater on it does. We have paid out for new injectors etc and its not solved it

Is the pump electronic?
is the boost sensor electrical?
The sensor maybe faulty telling the ECU its on boost when it isn't causing over fuelling.....?

Try unpluging the boost sensor on the inlet manifold, this will cause the engine to run without the extra fuelling for on boost. car will be dog slow but you willl be able to see if this is casuing it.
Maybe wait till it smokes next then unplug it.

Have you had a diagnostic check on the ECU?

Just a thought, could be the valve clearances but should get better as the engine warms up.

Taking it down to a guy in Stafford tomorrow new bosh pump, injectors, cambelt with tensionors £300 all fitted so I hope this sorts it

Took it over to Stafford and its all working after a new cam belt.pump injectors. The guy is spot on used to work for PUG he found. The last injector very tight and the pipe brittle so in his opinion it had never been changed 2 weeks ago. The pump on taking the fuel pipe off he found someone had cut the metal pipe with snips so it was almost crimped he was amazed fuel got through. He found two leaking pipes and the cam belt was about to give up the ghost. It was stupid someone had replaced cambelt tensionors and water pump and then put an old belt back on.

I got there at 8:46 and he finished at 2 oclock new pump, cam belt, injectors, all fitted £268. Have to go back for a stage 1 tune up with a govenour mod tomorrow as he had to go out on another job.

The block is crazy he wont touch it without his gloves on and he wouldnt let me go home as the engine was dirty he had to stream clean it as he doesnt turn out jobs less than perfect and he had spilt diesel so it had to be cleaned.

We ordered a part off him a while back as he does PUG Audi saxo parts and he missed the post so turned up at our door in Crewe with the £13 part at night as he knew we were waiting for it which must have been all his profit gone
