I'm back baby!
Now I've moved from a nice-but-modern-so-thin-walls house to an old-and-proper-solid pub I can get myself a pull-up bar that I won't be pulling the house down with.

What's recommended? Door-frame one? Screw into the wall? I don't know where I'm going to put it yet so I'm fairly open to ideas.

Where would you buy from?

Also, when I was talking to one of the regulars he said there was absolutely no point in having one. It did nothing. I thought it was a pretty good form of exercise?

I can't advise on which one to get but I can definately disagree with whoever said that exercise is useless.

Yon switch between close and wide grip and overhand and underhand grip to target a variety of muscles, it's a really good exercise. Although if it's in a door I doubt you can really grip it very wide, regardless it's still good :D

No idea where you'd get one from, Google some gym supplies shops though, plenty of online ones.

As for effectiveness as an exercise, there's no doubting the impact of pull-ups. They work both your upper and lower arms, shoulders to some extent and mostly your back muscles, and as mentioned varying your grip on the bar gives different results too.

If you can lift your entire body weight in a smooth and controlled motion just using your arms then no one can say you're not doing something right.

With you living in a pub I take it you have a pretty big cellar? Should be easy to find somewhere to put one down there.

Another choice is on the stairs, there's usually loads of headroom. Not that easy to fit in with the decor though so you'd need an understanding missus :D

Imho door frame ones are the worst and offer you the least variety and options due to the obvious lack to room.

Didn't someone post one a while back that attachs itself to the outer and inner door frame? It looked very sturdy and a lot stronger looking than the ones you screw in just inside the frame. But if you've got really high frames, Argos sell cheap ones at around £6. The other ones mentioned were closer to £30 if I remember correctly.

The cellar is massive and has 3 partitions. Unfortunately I have to stoop to walk about :D

The pub we've taken over actually used to be a railway worker boarding place, and it is huge. The cellar is a no-go but anywhere else in the building is OK. High door-frames, massively high ceilings, you get the picture :)

If you have enough room (height) to fit a screw in bar then I'd definately take this option. They allow a much better range of movement as you're not limited by the Width of a door frame and generally will be a better bar. You can perform close grip, wide grip, palms in, palms out and work a much larger variety of muscle.

I'm sure they are a little more expensive than the 'door frame' variety but in my eyes it's well worth it. And as you've said the walls are thick and solid I'd consider a screw in bar an ideal choice :)
