What was your rep / set range.

Chances are your form, tempo, diet or routine was/is lacking something. Properly performed chins are simply superb for both mass and strength.

I love pullups I have a cheap bar from argos which screws into the door frame and sits in some cups. Works for me, but I'd like one of those "pullup stations" eventually.

You just have to be carefuly with screw in ones for how much load they can take.

I was thinking of getting one of those that hook around the door frame but i don't understand how it doesn't rip it down!

Because it's not just a downward force on the doorframe at the top, it's also a sideways force against the face of the doorframe from the front. So you're pushing against the entire wall, not pulling on the thin doorframe.
