pulling a sickie

If we are off sick now we are supposed to call a HR number so it can be centrally logged and your line manager informed ... but unless I am really sick to the point of physically being unable to do anything then I tend to work from home (always documentation to do ...) ...

In that case I'll normally IM my line manager when he comes in (he's normally in 15mins after me which is still 45mins before my official start time).

I haven't been off ill in the past very often but have always called in to the office if I am ... I have had colleagues though who have just texted or emailed (frequently just to me as the normal first one in with a message to tell our team leader ... not a good idea as I don't normally notice the alert beep so don't check for messages until we start wondering where they are ... :))

After looking at the company sick policy it says 'must contact their department leader/manager at least an hour before their shift starts' which is how they must get away with it as it doesn't state they have to phone in.

Do they accept this at anyone elses work place?

What if you wake up after being half asleep with dubious stomach and as soon as you wake up, get out of bed and stand up you run to the bathroom to vomit - however you're within 1 hour of your shift starting - do you have to come in and stick a bucket by your desk?

Don't see that it matters too much tbh... if you can't get through with a quick phone call then send a text/e-mail - if you don't get a reply via text/e-mail then try phoning again.

No e-mail/text option here, in fact I can only call in sick in special circumstances. Ordinarily we have to come to work as normal then book an appointment with the doc and get signed off.

I'd love to be able to call in sick from my bed, I've only had 4 or 5 days off due to illness in the last 11 years anyway. Had a few more due to injury though, but still only about 3 weeks total. I've never understood people pulling sickies.

I usually email the appropriate authority and CC a colleague so they know not to expect me. I also add an out of office to my voicemail and email. I only phone if I am going to miss something significant.

My old job I would call in.

He always knew I was out on the **** though. But the fact I pulled a sickey once in a blue moon he always let me away with it.
