Notice that there are no values....what does that tell you?

Print that out and staple it to his face.

Who the hell would even fit a towbar to an aygo?

ahhh new bit for top gear, smallest car to pull a caravan up a smallish hill :) have it like the fastest celebrity bit but with the smallest engine sizes :D

he aint doing it anymore but dont call him a retard hes only been driving a few months and aint into the whole engine spec side of things, so he didnt know any different

Put a K&N on it and remove the cat, will increase performance by 100BHP and give you plenty of torque wont it? :p

Yer, although it wouldnt solve the fact that when the caravan was attached the front of the aygo would be off the ground. :(

there's nothing wrong with having a small car with a towbar on it. just don't tow a caravan with it.
It's not just the weight, it's also the affect wind would have on it. a trailer tent would be ok cos it's low down.

another thing to consider is that many small cars are not designed to have towbars fitted to them nowadays. in order to have a factory fitted towbar nowadays, you have to type approve the car with a towbar, which means extra crash tests etc, and more costs. so on small cars that will rarely have towbars fitted they don't bother even engineering a towbar into the design.

this in turn means that it has NO official towing limit, and is therefore illegal to tow anything with it. I beleive the Ford Ka is one of these. perhaps the aygo also.

also the thing about the car having to weigh more than the trailer is just an advisory.

i wouldnt call him a retard, but it doesnt take a genius to figure out that a small car wont cut it. thats like you trying to pull a mini on a bicycle - not really gonna happen....

It doesnt take a genious to know a car with a small engine cant pull a caravan. Sounds like some people shouldnt even be allowed on the roads, especially contemplating a move like that :o

A towbar is actually a toyota fit accessory for the car though - which doesnt make any sense since it isnt reted to tow anything :S Was reading the brochure today whilst I was waiting to get the landcruiser back and I was really really surprised at the stupidity...

It's not pulling the caravan that's the problem, it's stopping the thing. If he's going 50mph and has to perform an emergency stop, the Aygo is so light that the caravan will just plough it on, rendering the brakes useless and most likely ending up in losing control and flipping the damn thing. Just look at the tyres on the Aygo, my motorbike had wider wheels and more rubber in contact with the road.

I doubt such a notion is down to a lack of automotive knowledge, as far as I'm concerned, the driver is a complete retard for even considering it.

As someone said the abilty to tow is based on a cars weight.....e.g modeo's/volvos heavy cars. If its a decent size caravan it will lift the back of the aygo up.....it will look ok but it will not be.... :D It may be one of those mini-mini-super small caravans.

Small car's might have towbars for trailers and will probally have single electrics.....double usually for caravan (modern).

Basically he will wreck the clutch pulling of from standing still. Maybe not first go. If he has to reverse up a hill he will be ......nevermind...lol

On another note how old is his licience because more modern liciences do not cover towing caravans like the older one's do.

If you passed your test after 1997 you can tow a caravan so long as the entire outfit does not exceed 3.5 tons.

/edit

Category B vehicles may be coupled with a trailer up to 750kgs MAM (allowing a combined weight up to 4.25 tonnes MAM) or a trailer over 750kgs MAM provided the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM.

For example:

* a vehicle with an unladen weight of 1.25 tonnes and a MAM of 2 tonnes coupled with a trailer with a MAM of 1.25 tonnes could be driven by the holder of a category B entitlement. This is because the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes and also the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle
