Assuming both are the same price do I go with the ACX or DirectCUII?

Asus looks better in my case but EVGA better support.

I will OC. So, when both cards are pushed to their full potential am I right in thinking ASUS wins (I think I read it is quieter and cooler when at full potential compared to EVGA)?

Neither, get this one : http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-234-MS&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1341

And with BIOS mods all cards tend to overclock the same anyway.

My old Windforce 3x was running a custom BIOS which disabled GPU Boost, upped voltage to 1.212v and with that my card ran a constant 1.3Ghz core.

Although I would buy the cheaper, yet faster R290.

Hmmm. Do you have any links to hand that I could compare r290 vs 780? I have googled and didn't find anything which jumped out at me.

Edit: and isn't the R290 hotter than the 780?

290 has a slightly higher TDP than the 780 but they both produce similiar levels of heat in operation (290 is a little higher) just the 780s tend to be more efficent at removing it from the core - if you had for instance extremely poor case ventilation both would get to similiar temperatures.

My money personally would be either on the Gigabyte WF3 based cards or the EVGA. So far I have nothing but good things to say about my GB 780 GHZ edition.

I currently have MSI and fancy a change.

I fancy a change from AMD too unless the R9 has any real advantage over the 780. Anyone got any reviews/stats on this point?

Does anyone have an exact comparison of the Gigabyte vs the Asus vs the EVGA, including temps and noise?

BTW - I've decided to spend the rest of the day making my mind up :-)

Temp wise im seeing a max of 64c in game using a custom fan profile, (my case has no front air intake). Using a phone decible metre i recorded a max of 32db in game at 2 feet from the case. It will be louder now though as ive since changed case fans to ones a bit louder. But the card itself is very quiet.

non reference 290's are the only ones i would go for, I chose a non ref 780 for £380 and have never looked back.

+2

Don't get the Lightning as it may come with Elpida mem which doesn't/didn't clock well

make that +3

had my wf 780 under a week but im very pleased with it so far, its very quiet and i can max bf4 and black flag with comfortable frame rates

Just read that the wf cooler is louder than the reference. Is that true?

Not been my experience of it - can't even hear mine in normal operation and need to push it upto about 60% before I can hear it over anything else in the case.

Nope, must have been someone who had one with a faulty cooler. It's incredibly quiet. I find that it only gets really audible at 70%, on stock fan setting it will never hit that speed.

Ok thanks guys.

I just need to make my mind up on r9 290 or 780 gtx. I have flip flopped 99 times in the last hour. Convince me which is the best bet please ... Everyone is saying 290 and the only thing putting me off in reality is that the 290 is way hotter??

Edit. Btw my sig is incorrect. I'm currently 1440p and xfire frozr 6950.

One person has said 290 and the others have said 780. Add me to the 780 list as well. Great cards, great price and less hassle than the potential AMD problems that seem to be in abundance with the 290/X.
