Pulling the trigger in next hour: 780 GTX - EVGA or ASUS?

780 purely for all the problems I've seen with the 290s. Plus the 780s will run a bit cooler/quieter.
The Gaming Edition can be found for a good price.

Non ref cards are cooler/quieter, but the only problem is that they dump heat into the case. This isnt an issue though if you have good airflow in your case.

The 780 is a cracking card and if you get a EVGA with the ACX cooler, is pretty quiet and cool too, not to mention EVGA's excellent warranty.

You need to revise your siggy too as we are only allowed 4 lines of text. ;)

What are the problems gents? If there are some even with non ref cards then that has made my mind up!!

Have a look at the last 3 pages of this forum and you will see the problems people are having with 290's/X's and with non reference cards as well.

Well, I haven't had an R9 290 or 290X so can't comment on their reliability but recently when my 7990 died, I opted for yet another 780 as an RMA replacement. This was mainly following the "black screen" issues and problems generally having read these forums. I must say though that I would like an R9 290 or 290X to have a play with.

Asus have gone down hill from my experience, i had a 680 that came with a heatsink that was did not have a good contact with the GPU outta the box, i had to reseat it as i did not want to send it back for something so simple, i then had the Matrix 7970 when they where on offer, that had to go back because it just did not want to run at stock clocks, but bought that here so had no trouble getting a refund, they have great coolers though

I would only buy gigabyte, EVGA and MSI, i had the EVGA 780 and that was very cool and quiet, this winforce i have now is not so cool but same as most other ti's but just as quiet, id be happy with either card, 290 or the 780

Main issue with the 290 is that there are some with weak Elpida memory that seems to result in a lot of black screens and from what I've seen can only be sorted by RMAing the card.

Secondarily theres a small number that don't seem to like running at the normal operating temperatures of the cards (which is a bit higher than you normally get with GPUs).

I am a evga fan, never bought a different card since 260 and never had one fail.
I'd buy evga for multiple reasons:
Build quality
Warranty
Overclocking
Software
Removing stock cooler doesn't void warranty

All that come at some extra cost but it's all well worth it.

I'm now leaning towards EVGA. I probably would feel really bad if I ignored all the warnings on ASUS (although that card would look sweet in my rig).

So: SC ACX or, for £20 more, Classified? What's the £20 gonna get me?

A chip that can rock your socks off and let you throw volts at it :)

If you're not going to overclock it, SC ACX. Although my ref EVGA cards still clock nicely-ish

I'll let Geeman confirm for sure, but I'm fairly certain it's the same cooler so any differences would be negilable. I'd definitely go for the Classy though.

I've never owned a 780GTX Classy but they clock amazingly well. I've still got a 680 4GB Classy here. Amazing card :D

My mind is made up then. Classy it is. Before I click the magic button though - does anyone forsee any issues with my PSU (Seasonic 760) and Mobo (P67A-GD65).

And by the way, thanks to all of you for helping with this head-scratcher!

Wait till Wednesday and I am sure it will be on the weekly offers page! I can't believe the lack of 780 cards on the current weekly offers page!
