OK,

I've been trying to sort out a 7200RPM drive for my programs/games and media.

I bought a Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB first and once installed, it gave off an osciallating hum that would fade in and out in 5 second cycles. I RMA'd it and got a refund.

Fine.. i'll try another; I order a Samsung F3 HD103SJ 1TB and guess what; this one has an annoying hum too, though it seems to be more constant and happens on a 1 second cycle.

I'm going to RMA this too as its the weak link in my fairly quiet computer. I've got an oldish Hitachi Deskstar 1TB 5400RPM in there and its virtually silent.

Am i having bad luck or being too much of a perfectionist? Is it anything to do with the higher RPM?

Can anyone recommend a quiet drive?

Tried using rubber washers to dampen it? My 2nd hard drive also does this. It's more the case resonating that the hd itself

I installed a F3 1TB in my Antec P183 which has silicone mounts, where no part of tge hard drive is in direct contact with the case, yet it resonated with the case very badly.

So I suspended it with 4mm elastic bungee cord and fixed it with p-clips. No noise now.

WOW - thats some impressive DIY

I've moved it to a different slot and the sound seems to have gone.

I thought i had a duff drive; the Barracuda i had first time round was probably fine!

Cheers joey

No worries, you fixed it yourself though. :p

Tealc, nice work. Might try something like this as I still need to give the case an occasional tap when it starts buzzing

This is the reason why i dont buy Samsung drives, ive had a F1/F3/F4 and they all had that humming sound, its the motor that Samsung use apparently.

I have just bought a new 1TB HDD yesterday which was an Hitachi 7K1000.C which is silent no huming sounds at all http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-067-HI&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1279

The F3 is not that much faster either.

Ive owned 2 Hitachi drives now the 2TB 7K2000 and the 7K1000,you wont get any humming sounds with those drives, people stay clear of Hitachi HDDs as they had many problems with there drives yrs ago and were nicknamed "Deathstar",the drives they make now and quiet and very reliable,i wouldn't buy one else.

Right...

I've taken the HDD out of the case and stuck my ear against it while its running and can confirm that it is the the source of the humming .

It's going back and i'm going to take your advice kmufc77 and go with a HItachi.

As i said i've already got a deskstar in there and its pretty much inaudible.

Samsung & Seagate have both let me down!

Well i received my Hitachi 7200RPM 1TB; installed it and it's virtually silent :p

I can't believe people put up with dodgy sounding drives and go through the trouble of doing the bungie thing
