Punk creator dead

RIP

If you think about it the culture is still going on today. Just look at NME full of bands with a scruffy 'we dont care' look. Never happened until the punk era

RIP Malc.

Just on a side note - I don't think he created Punk (That would go to Richard Hell) - but he definately made it more mainstream ( & more or less defined it in the UK anyway after seeing the Neon Boys in America a year earlier, and copying their look in his shop along with Westwood )

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Hell

"Hell was an originator of the punk fashion look, the first to spike his hair and wear torn, cut and drawn-on shirts, often held together with safety pins.[3] Malcolm McLaren, manager of the Sex Pistols, has said Hell was an important inspiration for the Sex Pistols' look and attitude, as well as the safety-pin accessorized clothing McLaren sold in his London shop, Sex"

The guy who persisted in getting Sid Vicious high on heroin, and encouraged him to be more outrageous, on that final American tour. Despite Sid trying to get clean, Malcolm was determined to manipulate them as his play thing, he called them his own "sculpture". After the tour, Sid OD'd and died. No doubt Malcolm was a clever and profound visionary, but he was also, by most accounts, a complete ****.

Anyway, RIP.

Says he dies of Mesothelioma which as far as I know is most likely down to exposure to asbestos. I wonder where he would have come across that in his punk days. Apparently it is one of the nastiest ways to go :(

RIP :(

Apparently - and i don't know how accurate this is - McLaren was looking to sign another up and coming punk band alongside the Sex Pistols, and chose to approach **** Sparrer.

Whilst meeting with CS in a pub in the East End, they told him they'd sign the contract as long as he got a round of pints in. When he refused, they tore up the contract. Antother version of this says that CS didn't sign as they didn't want to cut their hair in the manner that McLaren wanted!

+1

John Lydon in "The Filth and the Fury" is very enlightening about Sid's demise and McLaren's role in it.

Hardly the punk creator, more like the punk commericializer.

Sex pistols were not much more than a boy band.
