Where should I look for a good pedigree puppie? I'm keen to make sure it is from good stock with the right tempremant and free of any hereditory problems.

What pedigree are you after? We have a miniture Schnauzer who's parents won Crufts. He came from a place in Leek that breed that particular breed of dog.

Kennel club are a good start, though you need to know what you're after really and what has problems with being inbred etc.

Presuming you're after a specific and you're going to possible show the dog, they are your people.

Alternative is the RSPCA if all you want is a family pet - the vets/carers will spot the 'problem' dogs and it is pretty easy to spot what'll be a psycho anyway.

Favourite is Great Dane. Would also consider Dobermann and Rhodesian Ridgeback.

We got our Shih Tzu from Mayfield Kennels located in Pendlebury, Manchester. Can't remember for certain if it was mother or father without digging out the papers, but one of them won best of breed at crufts so they do havefairly decent stock in. Not visited there for 10 years though but will be returning soon as we lost ours to cancer a couple of weeks back.

Have you had a look at a Cane Corso, they are a magnificent animal.

You might try here for Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They will cost anywhere from £300-£800 and above. I like them as I have an interest in ancient Rome and they were used to fight wild animals in the Colosseum.

There is info at the bottom as to breeders. I am sure they can point you in the right direction.

Link.

The only dogs I've kept were 2 black Great Danes one to 11yrs & one to 13 . Get them not a 'fashionable breed'. Great with children (funny considering their size),almost human & not chav dogs:)
No idea where to get them up there though, but the Great Dane Society is a good place to start, they're proper dogs:)

Edit: Most importantly when acquiring a large pedigree, meet both parents & look at their history:)

Italian Spinone are another BIG dog that's got a good personality. Friends of ours have 2. One has a perchant for pints of guinness and the other eats beer mats!

here's a photo of one and no, they aren't related to spaniels (apparently)
