Hello,

I’m a new member to the forums after been looking for a new PC component retailer. I’ve stumbled across OverclockersUK quite often now and they seem to put on good deals. I appreciate all the answers and helpful advice that will be given to me. If I’m lucky perhaps OCUK may not knock some ££££ off components in January for the sales.

I have a budget to purchase the remaining components excluding peripherals which is around £600 to £650.

PC Requirements:

I am going to game at 1920x1080p resolution as I got two new monitors just before Christmas. My main is going to be gaming but I will be editing quite often as I am looking to learn it. I prefer Intel over AMD as they are more superior in gaming but only by a little bit. I do plan to overclock but that will come at the end of January when I have more money to purchase a watercooling kit.

What I’ve bought

• Inwin GRone Full Tower Case
• Kingston Hyper 3K 120GB SSD
• MSI 280x Gaming Edition GPU
• Optical Drive (Off Friend)
• Operating System (Off Friend)

What I need to buy

• CPU - I do want to overclock so Ivy or Haswell?
• PSU - Gold Efficiency?
• RAM – 2400Mhz necessary?
• HDD (I’ve got 320GB but looking for 2 x 1tb for RAID 0)
• MOBO – Crossfire
• Aftermarket CPU cooler (But want to purchase watercooling kit later on)

Couple of questions

My friend says to get an Ivy Bridge if I plan to overclock as they have more potential but I’ve been reading that the Haswell has a 4.2GHz overclock which is equivalent to 4.5Ghz Ivy Bridge. Which one?

The RAM he suggested was the Kingston HyperX Beast 8GB 2400MHz but I’ve been reading that the extra MHz won’t make a difference but the latency will. Which RAM should I get?

All the components will be purchased off OCUK as the experiences have been impeccable!

Thanks,
keemann

Hello and welcome to the forum.

For large amounts of video editing, an i7 and 16GB of ram would be recommended, it will also help with xfire in some games.
If you are going to purchase a watercooling kit end of January, then just use the stock cooler until, save wasting money.
Why 2x1TB hdd in raid?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £269.99
1 x Seasonic G series 750w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £109.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87X-SLI Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £97.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2400HC11CDC01) £55.99
2 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD £47.99 (£95.98)
Total : £643.44 (includes shipping : £11.25).

Thanks for the help. I meant to say 4 x 500GB RAID 0 as I would like 1TB for games and the other for editing software/videos. The 320GB will be for everyday programs such as Microsoft Office.

So would the haswell be a better buy but it has lower overclocking capabilities?

With a decent cooler, air or water, you should be able to get a 4.5Ghz OC. And the fact that Haswell is optimised for faster ram, makes it a good choice for video editing and the like.
