Purchased 3080 Ti - decided to go back to Air cooling whole rig

I've had my rigs CPU water-cooled via a custom loop and a D5 pump for years then I received the 3080 ti and connected everything up and started it up.

Then noticed what I thought was coil whine after installing or maybe it was the D5 pump (whatever I thought) but the more I thought about the coil whine and having an expensive GPU sitting just below the CPU water block it got me thinking if it was time to go back to air. Can you imagine a CPU block leaking on that exposed part of a 3080/3090.

Cut a long story short I ended up getting a Noctua NH-D15 and I cannot believe how much quieter the desktop PC is now and safer. Maybe my D5 pump was on its last legs. Who knows lol

Just a cautionary tale of protecting your expensive stuff !!

I did exactly the same! had a h115i platinum aio though, too much rgb, seven wires to connect! software to run it all! I too bought a noctua D15 two fans (black model) it is amazing its cooling a 5900X really well, Asus 3080oc tuf, decided to go back to air just because its simple, don't think I would go liquid cooled again, too many failure variables, more than satisfied now, :p

I have a H110iGT and not had any issues. It's a few years old and keeps my i9900K cool @5ghz. Gaming usually 50-70c in the summer. How's the Noctua do? Another thing that made be change to a AIO is the weight of the HS hanging on the mobo.

I've not had a chance to monitor the temps fully yet but I've just finished playing a game and the CPU now resting at 58 with fans running on silent through AI Suite 3 (CPU is Ryzen 9 3900X) - I think when I checked just before I kicked off game it was 52. GPU temp is currently 45

Not too mention the money it costs and you're risking now is more than ever. Out of interest what was the difference in temps?
on idle 36-37° fans 650rpm, on load has gone upto 75° fans 1100rpm but still not loud, but that's an extreme example doesn't usually go above 60° this is on a b550 aorus master, 5900x all cores 4500mhz manual oc, with pbo on, system constantly ramps up and down! so set to a happy medium, in other words there isn't a lot of difference between aio or air, just a lot less hassle, ;)

I'm thinking about trying water next. I've always used air in the past.

I'd never buy a component that was so expensive I couldn't afford to replace it anyway. So if it leaks it leaks.

I to recently made the change back to an air cooled GPU and AIO cooled CPU.

My custom loop had 6 140mm fans and 2 x 280mm rads cooling a 3090 and 5900x.

Temps are a touch warmer but it’s a lot quieter on air now which is a bigger plus

really neat looking system! very tidy, yes, but I'm still happier with air!:p

Very good looking, but be careful about air getting stuck in the pump block. Given that the tubes are going straight down it'll be harder for air bubbles to be moved to get trapped in the rad.

Possible that it could be a dead AIO quickly if you're not careful.

I have water-cooled my systems twice now. And every time I do so. It is always at the back of my mind whether I will have a leak at some point.

So back to air again and staying air from now on.

I have cheap Chinese Case with 2 200mm fans.
Noctua 15 on 5600x and its 35c idle 60c gaming and 70c stressed.

Fans silent.
GPU is a bit annoying . Its 1080 40c idle, but goes to 70c gaming and warms cpu up to 60c .

Went AIO in 2012 and would never go back to air. Never had a minutes problem I bought a recon Corsair unit from here for £30 and it lasted me 7 years and was still in working condition, I only swapped it for a another Corsair because the old one wasn't compatable with Ryzen.
