Hi ya fellas,

I've just purchased the following to upgrade my home cinema surround sound.

SONY STRDA1200ES - specs here
STRDA1200ES-bk-with-mic.jpg

WHARFEDALE DIAMOND 9 HCP HOME CINEMA SPEAKER SYSTEM
Consists of the Wharfedale Diamond 9.CC Centre Speaker, two pairs of the Wharfedale Diamond 9.0 Stereo Speakers and the Wharfedale SW150 Subwoofer.

I've purchased 40m of QED "micro" speaker cable and various "high end" cables to connect my AV equipment together including 3x opticals for my PS3,Xbox360 and Sky+.

I'm looking forward to the improvement over my generic 6 year old Sony setup.

If anyone has any experience of the above components and can comment on their perofrmance then feel free. :D

Nice system!

Should be a nice improvement! :)

Been looking at the Sony's but worry that although they bring new technology they may not better my old Yamaha AX1 in the sound quality department.

I'd be interested in hearing comments on this (or a similar) amp too!

I'll do a review on it when it's all set up with pics :D

Ive just been down town to pick everything up except the speakers (they're arriving monday) in a black finish.

The wife isn't too pleased with the size of the Sony but she'll get over it ;) LOL.

I'm looking forward getting it all in,wired and setup with all the cables nice and tidy - a job for next weekend i think.

The fact it's regarded highly within the "Hi-Fi" circles made my mind up, i was initially going to go for the Onkyo 505 which again is quite highly regarded but only has 2x optical inputs and i need 3.

£100 more but well worth it in the future proof stakes.

I mentioned in your other thread that I've got the amp.

Have a read through the AVForums thread. The bass is lacking on the sony if you use auto-calibrate mode.

You should try manual and compare.

Just picked the speakers up, this evening.

The missus has "voiced" her opinion on the setup.

AV receiver = "A big black box that looks ugly"

Speakers= "Theyre ugly too, i don't want them on the walls"

In a nutshell= "Youve spent nearly a £1000 on this, why couldn't you buy a slimline one like we've already got that has all the holes (inputs) you need........look, here's one here in Littlewoods Catalogue"

Women, they do your nut in.

I think i've managed to appease her by saying i'll try and swap the Wharfedales for some Kef egg 2005.2's as admittedly they're smaller and they look more "modern" and less box-like.

Best of it is i've consulted the missus right the way along this purchase and explained the size of everything..........obviously she wasn't listening!

So hopefully the shop will exchange the Wharfedales for the Kefs, i'll try em tomorrow but what i'm gonna do about the AV receiver i don't know.?

I'm sure she'll come round when it's on the stand and integrated with the rest of my kit.

Paulstat, with all the cables etc i paid £960 all in.
That was with 3x QED optical, 1x QED component, 1x QED Scart (which has transformed Sky picture quality) , 1x QED 6m sub cable, 40m QED micro speaker cable and 20x bannana plugs

you've rumbled her

she was just nodding and going "uh huh" all along, whilst not actually listenning. Id make her have them just for penance for not listenning when she should have been.

Hahaaaa :D

She might have to if they wont accept them back.

Ive only opened and removed one of the speakers out of the 9.0 box so she could see them, it might be enough for them not to take the speaker package back.

If that's the case then tough titty!

:p

did you audition the kit before you purchased it? I always make sure the misses attends any sound tests so she can see and hear the kit I'm thinking about buying. Admitedly it helps that we both have a similar style in mind for our living room, I'm going sub sat as like your misses I don't want my living room to look like a speaker show room! Plus this means I negotiated the full sized stand mounts in the back room for dedicated music listening!

I didn't actually, when i decided to buy the missus was at work.

I've contacted the shop i bought the system from and they've got no problem swapping them for the Kef 2005.2's.

They've got cracking reviews so i'm going to be happy with them and visually the missus will be too.

I'm not getting rid of the AV receiver though ;)

I think you've made the right choice on getting rid of the speakers, they are a bit much assuming you've got an average sized living room, I'm not sure I'd let that reciever into my house though i'm not quite sure why home cinema kit needs to be so ugly I appreciate it needs to be big but big could still be beautiful.

Ask her if you can borrow the household trousers ;)

LMAO :D

Done it and the look she gave me could kill ;)

Anyway, all sorted now.........im keeping the 1200ES and changing the speakers for Kef 2005.2's

I think thats a reasonable compromise. :)
