Hey,

Can anyone recommend a website to purchase a domain name? I had a look on google etc but there is way to much competition, and was just curious which one's people use?

Thanks,

Andy

Vidahost have recently chopped their domain name prices.

However, I use Register1(dot)net for my domain names. They are a few pence more expensive but I rate them highly and once I get like that I stick with them. Only good experiences with both of these companies.

.com and .net you'll find cheaper from the US providers generally (godaddy et al) whilst .co.uk will generally be cheaper from UK providers. :)

Ditto. Used them for years and have many domains with them.

I use Godaddy generally, but on a few occasions I have used other companies but never really liked the service.

Slightly OT, I wanted to get gumbald.com, but it's been taken. I've got the whois for the squatters that have it. Is it worth me contacting them to ask for it? Has anybody done this?

Worth a try, at least. :)

Doesn't look like it's being used for anything in particular, and it's not exactly a massively popular search term. They may want a little bit of cash, though.

That's what concerned me :p I'm the only gumbald on the known universe, so it seems a blatant money seeking tool. The registration date is Jan 2006 though, before I started snapping up addresses :) Should I just go straight out and ask them what they want for it?

Sure. It might be a good idea to offer half of what you're prepared to pay though. That way, you can up it another 100% and it'll all seem fair in their eyes. ;)

I hope. :p

I wanted txsi.com but some fool has it registered and it's not in use, not even parked. :o

Actually, looking at the Who is, it expires this year..

Nobody will let a 4 letter .com drop.
Basically there are no more 3 or 4 letter combination .com domains available - they are all taken.
So even if the letters are all rather random, it has value in the fact that it is a short domain and people want short/easy to remember names.

Ah, something I didn't think of. :)

Thanks. :)
