Hi there!

I'm due to start a new job in the next couple of weeks. I'll be working as a sub contractor (self employed) and will be doing around 25-30k miles a year.

As much as I love my car, there is no chance i'm doing that mileage in a Saxo.

I've been looking at dirty diesels, Grande Punto 1.9 JTD Sporting, Seat Ibiza TDi FR 130, Golf 1.9 TDi 130 etc.

People keep telling to get a new car on finance or something as if the car goes off the road, basically I can't work.

As i'm using it for work, whats the best way to purchase one? Finance? Lease?

I'm coming from a Saxo so anything modern will be comfortable.

My budget is £2k deposit + monthly payments.

Have Fiat changed the engine in the Grande Punto?

Seems like they are running a 16v diesel now in the latest ones?

So I go for a larger car........

Monthly payments will be higher. Insurance will be higher.

I'm coming from a Saxo that was designed with dwarfs in mind. The Grande Punto is pretty roomy inside.

I agree, but it doesn't mean he has to buy brand new either. Just because it's new and in warranty doesn't mean it's going to be trouble free.
Someone I know just had to wait about 8 weeks for a replacement gearbox to be fitted in his van, in the mean time they gave him a Corsa as a courtesy car :o

Atleast he had a courtesy car.

I'm digging this back up as I started today and really do, need a) more economical b) bigger car, with cup holder lol.

I like the look of Vectra CDTi SRi's and Astra CDTi SRi's.

Golf's seem to be really expensive, even MK4s

Another one i'm considering is a Fabia vRS.

Still liking the Grande Punto Jtd though!

What about 3 series/A3??

Mate nobody really cares what car you drive, I don't know why so many people are so bothered about what others might think - most of the people you know won't give a stuff if you have a Skoda or an Audi. So just buy the car you like thats the best for the job in hand.

I do like the Fabia vRS. I'd have one of those now, never mind needing one for work.

Pro's

Good MPG
Decentish Performance
Cheap insurance
Good build quality

Con's

Poor handling
Issues with reliabillity (seen a few cases, not too worried)

I hardly bother to recommend these anymore becuase it's not worth the backlash from the OcUK idiot club but really a Mondeo TDCi is the textbook example of the best car for this job. You could even get an ST TDCi if you wanted it to look good.

How much for an ST TDCi?

I thought the MPG on TDCi's was mid 40's?

I'd not want to do 30k a year in a Fabia. It's a little city car, ideal for bimbling to Tesco or parking in town. It's not a long distance car. You need to be careful with it becuase it's the most over-rated car in the world, if you went internet-opinion of it you'd think it was some sort of amazing 70mpg high performance super fun amazing handling hot hatch that's refined and cruises well. It's none of this.

The Mondeo ST TDCi's seem to be £8k-£10 though:(
