Last week, my brother purchased Samsung UE55KU6470.

In general he has been pleased with it, but phoned me complaining of jerkiness/juddering with sports and gaming. I went through a few TV settings with him on the phone, but he's not that tech savvy. After suggesting he called the store, they advised him to return the TV. So he boxed it up and went back to the store. At this point its worth noting he has a standard PS4 and SkyHD.

The "salesman" has informed my brother that because his TV is UHD, the jerkiness is caused by his 1.4 spec HDMI cable not being able to carry the data fast enough to the TV. An £80 HDMI 2.0 cable would solve the problem

After speaking to him this morning, I've told him its nonsense. He is now unsure how to proceed.

Surely, this is BS. The TV does the up scaling.
But after ranting to him that its basically a scam, I am now doubting myself, as I have not made the move to UHD/4K yet.
My dearest HDMI cable was £5 from the supermarket.

Back me up !!

So just to be clear, has the £80 quid cable solved it? Because if it has you could just return it and buy a cheaper 1.4/2 spec cable? They do list a HDMI 2.0 3m cable on the website for £5.99

It's BS. It's possible that his current cable doesn't adhere to the HDMI spec, but an £80 cable isn't the solution to this if that was the case. Just a robust properly specced cable, which can be had for <£10 for a nice robust one.

It probably just a setting on the TV that he needs to adjust.

A HDMI cable will either carry a signal or it won't. If it's not a High Speed one it either won't display a picture or there will be constant drop-outs.

Tell him he should use 'Game' mode - That tends to turn off all the unnecessary processing that can cause weird motion and judder.

Blatant and morally questionable profiteering from the "salesman" (there's a clue there in that title)

Can existing HDMI cables support the higher bandwidths of HDMI 2.0 Specification?

Yes, existing High Speed HDMI Cables (wire only) will support the new higher bandwidths (up to 18Gbps).

HDMI 2.0 specification defined a new, more efficient signaling method, for speeds above 1.4b limits (10.2Gbps), to allow higher bandwidths (up to 18Gbps) over existing High Speed HDMI Wire Cables.

The jerkiness and juddering will most likely be coming from image processing such as frame interpolation being applied in picture settings.

Tell him to return to the said shop and apply the standard GD solution to their letter box.

Never ever buy cables from Currys/PCW, they are insanely over priced and get sold to stupid and or lazy people only.

i picked up a chromecast audio last week from curry's , i needed a 3.5 too two phono lead , they wanted £16.99  went round the corner and got it for £1.50

I recently purchased a UE40KU6400 TV for use with my PC and purchased a HDMI 2.0 cable from Amazon for like £8
I think it's BS as he's not feeding the TV with a UHD/4K signal so the 1.4 cable should be fine for his current needs.
Does he have the motion processing enabled in the picture menu?

Excellent.
Thanks for the replies.

What I was failing to comprehend, was that his existing SkyHD box was connected to his old TV using the same cable.
Surely, the only reason he would ever need a higher speed/spec cable, would be for native 4k/UHD content, which his Sky box/PS4 cannot produce?

I would have gone round and set the TV up for him, but its an 80 mile round trip.

surely he only needs a hdmi 2 spec cable with 4k sources
juddering would indicate he's not set input to correct type eg game or adjusted motion processing etc

curry's own recommendation from website
This Logik L2FHDMI15 Flat HDMI Cable is a great way to connect up your high definition AV and computer equipment.

It's capable of transfer rates up to 10.2 Gbps, handling Full HD 1080p, 3D and 4K Ultra HD signals, so you can make the most of all your entertainment devices. Gold plated connectors help to optimise signal transfer.
£19.99
still ******** though

Yep, with normal Sky and PS4 a 'standard' cable will be fine

The link above is not even a High Speed Cable either, as HDMI 2.0 is up to 18Gbps now!

I got a 'High Speed' cable with my Xbox One in 2013. When I replaced the console with an 'S' for 4K UHD blu-rays and HDR gaming, I kept the original cable in place and that works fine at 4k. So the cables have had the bandwidth before the 2.0 spec was even fully ratified.

Still cheaper than an £80 cable :D
Andi.

It's how they make money now, my folks went down boxing day to get a specific LG 4k tv they'd seen on the website. Granted they offered a deal with the TV and a matching soundbar for a good price but then wanted to charge an extra £100 for 3 HDMI cables  Ended up having abit of a barmy with my folks because they couldn't understand that a £10 cable would do the same job, In the end they didn't get them thankfully.

I recently had a cable cause juddering. I couldn't run my display at UHD@60Hz without juddering. Swapping the cable fixed the issue. The juddering was constantly reproducible. The situation is a bit more complex than than "it either works or doesn't".
