Push button start: Why?

I dunno if I am the only one but i tend to get in a car and put key in ignition then play with stereo, put on seatbelt, adjust seat maybe and then start the car.

A button is certainly easier in this situation

I get in the car.
Put my seat belt on
Start the car.
Adjust my mirror.
Play with the radio.
Then drive :D

Theres something about starting a car with a button which just adds to the sense of occasion. Admittedly on the Westfield I also had to flip up two toggles to activate the base electrics and the ignition/fuel pump circuits as well. The key was hidden under the dash down on the steering column.

At the moment, I agree. It's a sporty feature.

But will that sense of occasion still exist when push button starts are found on all cars?

Security?

How are they more secure? Remember, all cars these days have electronic immobilisers. No key, no start. At least with high end stuff, the sort of thing you find push button starts fitted to...

Oh yes  You're starting a fighter jet :D

I guess a start button would be a good idea for me too (rofl, look at everyone saying why they should have one).

I put the key in the ignition, turn the ignition on, while the fuel pump is priming and the car is running through its checks I put my seatbelt on. Then I start the car.

Would be much easier to just press a big red start button instead of having to reach for the key again. ;)

Starter buttons I can take or leave, but a big ass flip switch like something out of Dr. Frankenstein's lab to start the car.. now that would be a sense of occaision :)

My older brother had a switch to start an old banger of a toyota of his :p

There was no need for a key because he only picked it up for $100 and was using a sponge for an air filter :p

He drove it for 200,000kms until it died. He had no serious parts brake on it though

Remote starter for the win!! :D

Wife's Neon has this. Keyfob has 4 buttons on it:
Start
Lock/Unlock
Elec windows / sunroof (not used)
Boot release (not used)

Great for winter or summer use. If you know it's going to be -30 degrees out in the morning, leave the heater set. Wake up, push starter button, get ready while car warms up. During the summer, leave the A/C on when you shut the car off. Prestart the car and you arrive to it nice and chilly!! :p

For those saying someone could steal your running car, the gear shifter cannot be moved out of Park without the key in the ignition and your foot on the brake. The steering wheel is also still locked without the key. The doors are also still locked. And touching the brake pedal shuts everything down. So security is just as good as if the system wasn't there.

And if you get distracted on the way to the car and forget it's running, it has a preset runtime that auto shutsdown the entire system. It also has the added advantage of a built-in thermometer so if it drops below a preset temperature, it starts the car by itself to prevent the block from freezing up. It also has a built in voltmeter so that at a preset low voltage alarm it starts the car to recharge the battery.....

Keyless entry and push button start would be cool. Leave key in pocket, car opens as you get near, jump in, push button, go.

Having to use both the key and the button is as you say dumb.
Agreed. My door opens as I touch the handle. The engine starts as I push the button. All of this happens while the key remains in my pocket.

So, if cars are for driving, then why have...

Electric windows, electric heated seats, aircon, 20,000 watt stereo system...

All pointless stuff which just detracts from the whole driving experience :p
I agree!
*pats manual windows, racing seats, no aircon and an OPTIONAL cd player that you can't hear above 60*
