Push button start: Why?

I love the push button start thing... though I've only ever been in classic cars that do it.

It's that feeling when you turn the key and nothing happens, knowing that when you push the starter its going to spring into life with a roar, just can't beat it.

How are they more secure? Remember, all cars these days have electronic immobilisers. No key, no start. At least with high end stuff, the sort of thing you find push button starts fitted to...
Hmm, it was just my thought so you're probably right.

In my old Beetle, I wired in a flip switch and push button when the key ignition stopped working. That was pretty neat, didn't even need the key to start it.

Remote starter for the win!! :D

Wow thats really impressive, you fitted that yourself then - is it expensive?

I still have fond memories of my old cars heated seats on subzero days, it always took 5 minutes of driving to kick in though so something like that would have been very usefull

I paid $89.00US for the one in my wife's car and installed it myself in about 4 hours. Then when I got the one for my Neon (about 4 months later) I already knew what I was doing from the first one and the install only took me about 2 hours....

Both were the RS1300E model from Bulldug Security.....

I have the only push button start worthwhile..

Remote keyfob, starts engine and fires up the AC...

Get in nice cool car, put key in ignition and drive off...

:D

I'd like to get something like that for my car, I asked at my dealers and they just gave me a blank look. :(

Any ideas?

doesn't your air con automatically kick in depending on the temperature?
shouldn't be too difficult to set this up.

Depends on the car. If it's a non-climate control car like my Neon or my wife's car, then no it won't. You have to either preset the knobs for it or juryrig something up.

can't speak for US cars but i know the peugeot air con kicks in if the temp dial is set lower than the actual temperature inside the car.
it's def not climate control, just old fashioned air con.

The boundaries between aircon and climate control are blurring.

Strictly speaking, climate control should be totally automated so the system will control the temperature, fan speeds and direction of airflow accordingly without any intervention.

Some systems call themselves "semi-automatic" climate control, such as in the Mk5 Golf SEs we have at work. These will blow hot or cold air depending on the cabin temperature but you have to control the fan speed and direction of airflow yourself.

We had push button start on an old F reg cavalier once :p

(it was the easiest way to fix it when the start output of the ignition switch burnt out)

remote starter = useful. on a cold day easy to start it up from afar and then defrost it all later...

starter button/cards = useless. i dont want anyone to be able to get into my car unless they have outwrestled me for the key.

No mate, not without the engine running.

I'd like to be able to start the car & thus the air-con, with my remote key, prior to going out to the car to drive off, to give it time to cool down. :)

When eating my breakfast on the area in front of the hotel I was staying at in Miami beach a few weeks ago the bloke at the table next to me pressed his keybob and a nice V8 roar came from a car parked on the road a few feet away. It was bloody hot so must be nice to be able to do that and know when you get to your car in 5 minutes time it'll be nice and chilled.

If you try a well known auction site with a search for alarm remote start turbo timer you will probably find what you are looking for...

;)

How long does your aircon take to start working? The 10 year old system in my Saab is blowing properly cold within 10 or so seconds of starting the engine, and it feels comfortable not long after.

At the moment, I agree. It's a sporty feature.

But will that sense of occasion still exist when push button starts are found on all cars?

theres sometimes more to it than that

in the renault scenic, they manufacture all of them with a keycard and push button start, so you've got no ignition barrel which is obviously for security

and 2ndly, the higher trim levels have keyless acess, which is good as you never need to use a key and just press the button. Obviously for manufacturing reasons, its easy to give them all a card slot, and just add the wireless transponder on the expensive versions, rather than having completely differenct ignition systems on different models.

I am a new driver and have just bought a Renault Megane, it has hands free entry and start with the push button, as I am a new driver and still learning the car I occasionally stall it in the most awkward places, all i do then is just push the button and go again, real quick. Theres no messing about turning a key to turn the car off then turn to start on again!
