Push button start: Why?

Yup, although you also have to press the clutch pedal in :o it doesn't start with doing that :D . I really dislike the handbrake button in the passat aswell, I was at Birmingham airport and couldn't remember if I had pressed the button or not.

push clutch in, push key, foot on brake, press handbrake button, finally set to go :D :p

you can hear the brakes whirr when you press the button though so its easy to tell

try stabbing it when bounding down the motorway ay 80;)

also the electric brake deactivates if you pull off with it on

I prefer to have a key. None of this swipe card tomfoolery. I wonder if I can retro-fit a starting handle to the Mondeo.

im sure if you remove the starter motor and rig up some wacky linkage to just under the radiator it'll work :D

How long does your aircon take to start working? The 10 year old system in my Saab is blowing properly cold within 10 or so seconds of starting the engine, and it feels comfortable not long after.

Starts cooling within seconds, sadly, the leather seats don't though - My daughter complains about the "red hot seats" :D !

Hence the idea of cooling the car down for a few minutes prior to me getting in it. :)

Sry about the thread bumpage, been away working. :o

IMO the only starter button that is worth its while is either in keyless entry cars like the merc SL where you just need the card to be in the car. Other than that i love the starter button underneath the gearstick on the SLR. They have the starter button on the new Clio 197, and i really cant see why as you need to put the key in the ignition, then hold the brake and clutch then press the starter button, which makes it a bit pointless IMO.

I am running around in a 118d at the moment which has done nothing but reinforce my view that push button starters are irritating, if slightly cool.

Funny that, "irritating, if slightly cool" would sum up the 1 series for me! :D

Do we now get a "review of the 118" thread mate ?

can't speak for US cars but i know the peugeot air con kicks in if the temp dial is set lower than the actual temperature inside the car.
it's def not climate control, just old fashioned air con.
The climate control system on my car won't even turn the air con on :p

Erm if you REALLY want a review of a bottom of the range BMW hatchback I suppose I could throw one together tommorrow :p

I wouldn't mind reading it. Actually I just want to know what the engine is like. :p :) :D

I'll add 20% more of goodness to it then. ;) How is the *20d too? If you've driven one. :) :D

I've got one :D

The 120d Sport.

Pulls like a train, handles like it's on rails and doesn't cease to put a huge smile on my face everytime i plant my right foot.

163bhp 0-60 in 7.9 seconds - LOVE IT!

I had a MK4 Golf before the BMW and was pleased with that, but this is something else.

It's used daily as a family car for me, the missus and my 3 year old without a problem.

Shameless pimpage:

The push button start really doesnt bother me, to me it goes like this.

Insert keyfob to turn on electrics e.t.c, stick the clutch down (which is a safety feature in my book as the missus leaves it in gear) and press the start button.

Doesn't strike me as a gimmick, more another way of doing something.

Whats your paintwork like mightynimrod?

This one is swirlmarked to hell and back despite being an 06 plate car with just 1000 miles on the clock. If you told me it was a 2 year old ex-demo launch car I'd have beleived it were it not for the plate..

Yeah my paintwork is too, but nothing that really bothers me too much - scratch-x gives it a new lease of life.

I did return it to the dealership after i got it due to excessive swirlmarks, it came back with a 2 foot long scratch down the bonnet - the guy at the dealer asked if i had any cats round my area, when i asked him why he told me about the scratch i laughed out loud.
Stunt cat running one claw down my bonnet while doing a paw stand went through my head LMFAO

Re-painted bonnet sorted it ;)

Fox doesn't really like them as he thinks they're overpriced for what they offer :D

E60 530d Sport for me next ;)

Seriously though, if your getting any of the diesels you'll have a massive grin all over your face.
The petrol versions are lacking from what i've heard.
The run-flat tyres make the ride a bit firmer but not overly so.
I've got the sport version with uprated suspension - couple that with the run flats and it was slightly over-firm but nothing that bothered me.
Having "normal" tyres now has made it a good combination between tyres and firm suspension.
Gear change is nice and slick, no interior rattles and materials seem to be of decent quality.
