Pushy salesmen...gggrrrrr!!!

Though to give them credit, a few years ago a friend (he's like 70 I think and I help him out with tech stuff) needed a CD ROM Audio Cable, and ****y World wanted £15 for one  but a member of staff brought one out the back for him for free. :)

My local spicy food store is still selling scart cables for £50/£60 though. There's even an HDMI cable in the priced to clear bin at £75.:eek:

Actually that reminds me of something else, this time in a Small Solar System Body that orbits the Sun store.

We we're in town getting a DVD Recorder (and HDMI upscaler) VHS combi thing (Panasonic DMR-EZ48 for reference) and it had two Scarts on the back and S-Video/Composite inputs on the front (to record from a camcorder etc). So I ask the salesman "The second scart on the back, is that an output of the DVD/VHS it's playing or an input to record onto DVD from a Skybox etc". "It's output only". "Ah right" and we left the store.

Googled it outside on my iPhone and "It's an input to record from your Skybox/PVR onto DVD". Perfect!

So his lack of knowledge on the £250 product had lost him a sale.

Then did a few pricechecks and the Small Solar System Body that orbits the Sun retail store price was actually better than the internet. So went back in and bought it from another salesman...... and then the guy at the till then to flog me Monster (I *think* that was the brand) HDMI cables, I couldn't be bothered to explain it's a digital signal and only 3foot :o, and even worse priced Monster Scart cables.

If they annoy me, i talk to technical about things they would know.

Q: Could you tell me if the had drives are in Raid 0

A: Yes it has a HDD

Or my classic?

Q: Could you tell me the Clock speed of this cpu please?

A: (Guy points at the logo with a clock and lintel sticker) INTEL he repys!

you can't help but laugh.

They then become uneasy, and shut up, and i can them do my shopping in peace.

an electronics store cant remember name was in lakeside(a friend worked for em in another store)about 10 years ago(havnt seen them for ages now probably folded)

my neighbour was on about them not having anything in stock whenever he went there,
and i told him that they didnt like selling you items unless you got the extended warranties,
if you took out a warranty they had item if u didnt they didnt have the item, thats what the salesmen where told to do

He was wrong about speed, Should have sold you on the Unlimited being unlimited aspect. It's the reason I havent touched Virgin at my new home :p

One of the reasons I've recently switched to Sky from Virgin media also.

To the topic though, I normally just tell them nope don't want it & they usually shut up :p

When I worked at Argos on the tills if an insurance policy came up when typing in an item for the customer we had to offer it to the customer, it was apparantly part of our job

But yes I know the feeling and some of my mates are too easy going and would fall for this.

Yeah, they are just doing their job..... you can always say no to these questions you know? or be a little firm.

PC World are far worse than other retailers since their sales are mostly pc's/laptops.. which make so little margin that they are kinda forced to sell so many add ons at high prices. For instance, if they sold a laptop for £300 or so, that would only make them around £10 :p

Lastly, if you get them asking you for the tech support for 1 month free.... you could blag 2/3 months, they then have to discount £10 or so off the actual product to give you the free months. They are happy at this stage cause they got the sale and warranty, but when you get home, just cancel it :D - win win each way since you save around £10.

Similar thing last week while laptop shopping. I cannot bare purple shirt people, they have virtually no clue about anything. If you're going to approach me 4 times in ten minutes then at least have a ****ing clue.

lol i work in said spicy food shop

We have to go through the whole pitch but we are not meant to be so pushy, i am sometimes to a point, but i can usually guess what the person will need so i approach it differently. Some people like you know what you want but some people don't.

Lastly, if you get them asking you for the tech support for 1 month free.... you could blag 2/3 months

We would get murdered by managers if we gave more than a month for free, in my store anyway

I always refused to do the likes of that when I worked in a local shop. I would answer any problems and give my advise when asked but I wouldn't start offering things they had no intention of buying because I hate when people do it to me.

The "Can I help?" also annoys me too so I didn't do that either. Customers know to ask for assistance.

I unfortunately work in a place affilliated with those people, and we're basically given a script of how to sell stuff, sounds like the guy was a tool who had no soul, i tend to ask if people want it, and if they say no, i shrug it off, i don't care about commission, i prefer good customer service, as long as they don't bring it back and i have to do it all over again, i'm happy ;)

saying that.. when i recently closed my virginmedia account.. the rep on the other end of the line was practically begging us to stay, offering deals and incentives still what he was offering wasnt as good as the Be ISP i was moving to.. took 5 times me saying "can you just close the account please!" before he got the message. Telling a salesperson/staff member something once should be enough, twice ok i let you off this time but dont even dare push it a third time!

Your post reminded me of this
