Mrs does that. Indian rice style of bring to boil (after draining about 9 times), heat off, lid tightly shut and left for 45mins. Perfect rice!

Do people actually wash they mushrooms and spuds then? Wow.
Never wash mushrooms or spuds (unless cut up for mash or wedges etc).
If there's any bad bits just cut them off.
