Put Alan Turing on the next £10 note:

Yes - he has obviously read some of the stuff about him.

He was charged with gross indecency ( not just being gay ) with a teenage boy from what I recall.... and I don't think too many schools would be happy to explain who is on the £10 note - even if he is one of our cherished figures.

"Turing was never the same again. His body became feminized. He grew breasts."

Bit of cleavage on the new notes then?

I thought he had been pardoned at the end of the labour parties last gtv term?

Not quite, there was an apology from Gordon Brown but a subsequent request for a pardon was denied.

As for the idea of Mr Turing on £10 notes, I'm not hugely fussed either way. I'd have no problems with him on the notes or indeed in explaining who he was and why he may merit the honour but I don't much care which historical figure goes on the notes either.

What a disservice this country did to that man :(

Nobody knows for sure if there was a disservice done to him, remember he was suspected of being the guy who was raping schoolboys at a nearby library and was described as "an agressive homosexual" by his colleagues but thinking about that wtf does that even mean?LOL

"Early in 1944 a suspicion arose that he might have been the man responsible for molesting schoolboys at the main public library in Luton, a large industrial town not far from Bletchley. While no proceedings arose, it was decided that the need for good order and discipline required his removal - but not before he had done his finest work"

innocent untill proven guilty though

I suspect that these were vindictive rumours brewing from the fact that he was homosexual. But yes I suppose we will never know.

Wouldnt surprise me,he fitted the bill as far as they were concerned and why wouldnt any proceedings arise if he actualy done it?

I think they should put Jeremy Kyle on the £50's

I don't think you realise quite how insulting it is to compare Alan Turing to Jeremy Kyle.

Turing was also quite upfront about his homosexuality which wasn't the done thing in those days.
He also went to the Police admitting he'd been having relationships with an underage male (19 at the time) because the lad had stolen from him.
Pretty stupid by todays standards but back then it was very serious.

They are both equally uber in what they did for the Human race.

Maybe a Tenner with them having a big gay cuddle snog on it ?

To be honest, they should put some of the old ones back...

I could understand Turing replacing Elizabeth Fry though, despite her being from Norfolk, and a woman who we have a building names after.

Well Elizabeth Fry was quite important in the whole 'social reform movement' thing. A lot on that list you would think would be rather important though. And Brunel. And probably a lot of others.

I think the best thing to do would be to alternate. I get that it's supposed to be easier to recognize, but honestly i doubt the kind of person that wouldn't even look at the number or the size would know their name ;)

I'm not saying she wasn't significant, but yeah, there's just so many more famous, and perhaps more notable people who could go on it... Hell, I'm willing to bet 90% of people wouldn't be able to name the person on the £5 note if you covered up the name...

I think people forget how many people were actually working alongside Turing. I sometimes get the feeling people get a little carried away with all the homosexual/chemical castration thing.

Yes it was horrible, yes it was completely irrational and unjust, but what about the people in the teams of Hut 8? What about the other pioneers of computer science?

Just throwing that out there.
