Q-Tec 550W PSU - a fan has started whirring

I need a new fan for this PSU as one of them has started clattering.

I've already removed the fan so now the PSU is going on only one fan, possibly explaining the rise in my sys temps (along with the good weather).

Does anyone know if I can replace it with a standard 120mm case fan or are they specialised?

Invest in a better PSU. It is not worth trying to repair a Q-Tec PSU because something else will always go wrong. They have a terrible reputation and I have read that the 550 W can actually only supply just over 400 W and when strained anymore it can explode. An exploding PSU can potentially destroy every component of your PC. Buy yourself a quality PSU mate and youll have no problems.

Ok thanks, I'll consider a new PSU.

In the mean time - what kind of fan do I need to use? Are they standard?

P.S. if / when I get a new PSU, what would you recommend for my modest system? Total running is two WD HDDs, will be 1Gb of RAM, same CPU Mobo and GPU, and two dvd drives.

You are risking your Whole System by continuing to use that PSU.
You will not get Any good words about Q-Tec here as we have read to many horror stories concerning Q-Tec.
I and many others will tell you to rip it out and bin it replacing it with a reputable and known reliable unit.
Personally i have an Antec trueblue 480w. Not only does it look good the rails are rock solid and there are no horror stories stressing the back of my head.

Replace said unit ASAP.

Ok I'm looking at the PSUs on this page...

...and I have three questions:

- Would the Antec true blue be enough to run a system of the future, say if I upgraded in 6 months, i.e. with the new batch of graphics cards, dual core CPUs, etc etc? Am I future-proofing with this PSU or am I likely to need another when I upgrade?

- Is an ATX2.0 PSU backwards compatible with my standard ATX setup and what's the difference?

- Is it not better to have two larger fans on a PSU to aid with case airflow?

I have to say that Antec seem surpassed by other brands in recent months.
Be patient and a PSU dude with current info will post and put you on to the current best PSU option.
The one thing wrong with Antec's is if they do go wrong you have to send them out the country rather than a UK based resupplier.

TAGAN

Been using the 330W for awhile now. Was in a system almost like yours. Then moved it into an A64 system where its happier. People forget that A64, with a modest GF consumes much less, albeit you need good rails.

This might help you narrow it down.

Enermax PSUs are worth a look at as well.

I really wouldn't recommend you open the PSU to change the fan, could end up pretty nasty.

Is it SLi / Crossfire / SATA / dual core CPU compatible, i.e. reasonably future-proof?

Don't they have capacitors inside that can carry quite a considerable charge? IIRC someone on here forgot that and woke up 4 hours later being licked by his cat :p

Hence why consumer electronics recommend that you don't open them.

Also, most new PCI graphics cards come with an adaptor, as i found out after buying one here
