Is the Q6600 guaranteed to run @ 3.0GHz only supported should you use the motherboard and memory that they recommend?

I currently have a Gigabyte Ga-P35-Ds3 and 3GB OCZ XTC Platinum revision RAM, and have a low knowledge of Overclocking but am looking to learn, i was interetsed by the offer provided but wondered if it would be completely useless me getting it?

get it m8,ive got 6the ds3 mobo and the same chip and mine is at 3.15ghz and 21c idle with a tuniq tower.
superb chip and well worth the money.
my chip is a 2.4ghz conroe to start with.

Hi there,

I got mine a few days ago.

Put it straight on 333 FSB x9 (multiplier) with an AF7 and it is insanely fast @ 3ghz a core so you should be fine with the same kit :)

Right cheers mate, can i just ask, is it like a booklet or somet you get with it or somethign?

If you're talking about the guaranteed overclock to 3.0 on OCUK then I think they come with a noddys guide to overclocking which is aimed at the specific mobo they mention but there's plenty of info on this and other sites on how to overclock.

Well looks like the guaranteed to run at 3ghz Q6600 chips are OUT OF STOCK!! yet the regular ones are IN STOCK!!
... how does that work then??:D

Just go for the bog-standard Q6600 and overclock it. You'll have a really bad day if you get a chip that won't do 3ghz.

Basically, the maximum VID (Factory set voltage requirement) those chips are produced with is i think 1.36v, so regardless, even those ones should do at least 3.2ghz with adequate cooling.

If you're a gamer, in all honesty, you'll notice no difference between overclocking it to the extreme under liquid nitrogen and running it in a cardboard box, it's purely for benchmarking and knowing that you can get more thna what you paid for :)

The FPS difference in Crysis, etc between 2.4ghz and 3.4ghz for me would be like 2-3fps i'd say.

I just bought a Q6600 SLACR, and it wont even get past 2.67ghz, on water at any volt from 1.24 all the way up to 1.45.

Bad luck, or is there something im missing - also tried flashing the bios from p30-p31, made it even worst. The strange thing is it'll POST at any clock and multiplier from 2.4ghz up to 3.4, with the same temps (in the bios) but as soon as windows tries to init. USB it just resets itself, core temps are at 32-28 idle

Any ideas?

I got an MSI 680i SLI and got my e6300 up to 3.2ghz game stable with it, but im really annoyed, all I can do is make an almost identical 3dmark06 score, and encode video really fast, but it sucks at everything else.

i bought normal q6600 and my Vid is 1.2250. i dont think they would sell the worst as normal ones. that would not be fair.

SGCwill, mabye if you check your ram settings.. but i think its prob the cpu.. i say to sell it on an auction.. and buy a new one..

What are you using to get those temps? I've got a Q6600 G0 running at 3GHz with a 1.3vcore running at around 47C. Use coretemp to get your readings.

Unless you're running your PC in your fridge.

My Q6600 struggles past 3GHz even with the vcore at 1.4, temps aint bad at 48C, but I prob blame me 680i Board :( Got a Zalman 120mm cooler on it, but I was hoping for more.... oh well....

The 680i boards are notoriously bad at ocing the quads. That's why I replaced my EVGA 680i with a P5K Premium, and am running my q6600 at 3.6 1.35v :)

hmmm P5K no good for me SLI setup though, I may go 780i although the reviews on them are somewhat mixed also. :(
