Just recently got my new system upgrade, new motherboard, hsf etc..

I ran coretemp to make sure all temps were fine, temps are low enough but core 1 and 2 are sitting at 30 and core 3 and 4 sitting at 25 which is concerning me a little,My thoughts are that so far all i have done is re-install all my software from a clean os(windows 7) change and that core 3 and 4 are not getting used.

It was just on my old set up they all ran at 36/35

cheers

I have always had a difference of 10 degrees from core 1 to 4 with 2 & 3 being spread out inbetween, the general consensus was "don't worry, it's quite normal" slight variations in the application of the thermal paste and tasks each core runs will often make things slightly uneven.

Uneven IHS surface can cause temp differential between cores, the q6600's do often seem to suffer this problem. My temps dropped and were more consistent between cores after lapping the IHS,quite a laborious job but definitely worth the hassle. There used to be a guide on here somewhere outlining the procedure.

mine idles around 33-35 overclocked 3.2Ghz with about 2c difference between cores. In games this goes up to about 45-50 but never usually more. Not sure what ambient temps are in my room, its never cold though.

Just a little update on my temps. oc'ed to 3ghz and idle now runs at 38/38/34/34 which seems really good. I have my vcore set to 1.3 but drops to 1.28. is 1.3 enough for 3ghz as all my reading/research links temps to the vcore is this the case but cant find a universal vcore for a set overclock

I downloaded occt cpu tester and occt has my load temps max out at 65/65/62/62.But the linpack test was just a complete failure and the temps were insane at 80 and at stock hell they were at 66 lol so linpack no more.

I still have speedstep enabled which i think is giving me vcore warnings when it power saves and then jumps back to 3ghz can someone maybe confirm this is the warnings.should I disable it.Or is it my 1.3 vcore setting at 3ghz

So far my first atempts at ocing my q6600 is coming along slowly but stable.3ghz is as far as i want to go.Does 1:1 cpu/ram a must or is that again to help with stability as my bios gives me a advice error saying any lower than 800mhz will cause instability so i have it set to 800.

Thanks again

my q6600 needed 1.45 at 3.3 so 1.3 at 3.0 is pretty good i think.
what cooler are you using as mine idled about 28oC with my tuniq tower 120 ?

I had a massive difference in my Q6600 core temps after I changed my mobo a while a go. The temps at stock were higher than they were previously too. I finally got around to ordering some MX-3 and I refitted it the other day. It turns out one of the push pins had buckled and although it locked, it was keeping the base from properly sitting on the cpu.

After I sorted it out I started playing about with my oc again. To get 3Ghz I had to set the vcore to 1.325 in BIOS and that reports as 1.248 at idle in Windows (speed step enabled). That gives me temps of 26,26,22,24 at idle (about 10 degrees lower than the cocked up HSF install) and puts the cores back into the difference range I had previously.

If I drop the vcore any lower I get an error on core 2 in OCCT as 100% load causes the the voltage to drop to 1.15 ish.
