Q6600 finally saying goodbye?

Will do. All I have done was to reset the BIOS so the CPU is back to stock speeds computer switched on no problem and now it keeps restarting after an hour or so I think it has cleared the CMOS and went back to the old BIOS. If I remember rightly I did update the BIOS. Sometime ago but not sure if that is true.

Go through BIOS check for volts, achi if needed for faster HDD usage if using ssd, check fans if needed config in BIOS and check if plug and play needs enabling etc. On and make sure ram setup is OK too. Just if it has defaulted to stock it might need a few tweaks for optimal usage. Maybe just go ahead and clear CMOS then check stuff.

I would be more inclined to think this was just capacitor wear. If you have had it overclocked for many years then the power phases take a battering and will eventually start to become unstable.

The fact that it's far more stable when not overclocked says a lot. So if I had to stick my neck out I would say motherboard.

Check all in bios all seems good. Had to adjust ram settings and now fully stable. I must admit the speed difference from 3ghz to 2.4 is very noticeable lol. Time to save up I think.
X99 or z170 on the cards soon hopefully.

At least you're now stable whilst you think over your next move :)

The general consensus at the moment is i5/Z170 if you only need 4 threads, and X99 for any flavour of i7 as it's much better value.

I think x99 will be the way I go. And this time I more than likely wont be keeping to the same system for 8 years.

X99 would be my choice now. I went Z97 when my Z68 board died so I could re-use my memory, but now DDR4 prices have dropped X99 would be my choice.
