I currently have a q6600 that is running extremely hot, as some of you may remember. I am wondering what sort of temperatures people are seeing from this 'Energy efficient' version over the standard q6600, and whether you think it would be worth ebay-ing my current one so i can get an energy efficient one and FINALLY overclock it.

At the moment it is simply too hot to overclock.

Opinions?

EDIT: Possible move to cooling forum?

I'm not aware of the detail of your current problems but I would have thought the obvious concern is that whilst a G0 chip should run cooler your B3 shouldn't be that hot in the first place.

A G0 may not help too much since the problem could well be elsewhere.

There are many references to people with G0 chips having temps in the 30's C on idle not that much more on normal load.

On 3.4 GHz and with very quiet fans which therefore don't move that much air, my idle temps are mid 30's idle through to mid 40's on normal load.

What cooler do you have atm? Have you reseated it and used AS5 or similar?

Going from a B3 to G0 for me dropped it 5-10c ish.

If it were me, and already had a Q6600 (I wish!) I'd wait for a new penryn Q9450, faster stock speed @ 2.66ghz, larger cache, extra instruction set, etc., said to be around the same price as the Q6600, and only a couple of months away, I believe. And you'll still be able to sell your Q6600 on then.

Good point KelticDaz!!!! The Q9450 should clock to 3.55Ghz and be as fast as a Q6600 at 3.85 to 4.05Ghz. And you don't need fancy cooling to do this as they run very very cool.

I wouldn't bother moving as said - I've got a B3 and it idles at 36-40 odd @ stock and only goes up to about 45 odd idle once moved up to 3.2Ghz ...

I might well grab me a penryn once they have been about a while sometime next summer - tis a good thing i got the mobo I did as it shouldn't need anything updating to run the 45nm chips (if i'm not mistaken) :)

I've tried everything with my cpu, just seems to run hot. Possibly concave heatspreader, but from some tests it seems not to be. I use AS thermal paste, tower 120, and a decent enough case. I've reseated it plenty of times and still no luck. If you have any other ideas i'm more than happy to hear them, my only last option was to lap it, but i from the few degrees i may save i personally dont think it is worth it.

My best option at the moment i think is to wait for penryn like one of you mentioned. Any release dates confirmed/approximated?

Thanks for the input.
