Been offered a Q6600 and it overclocks well.

Question is how does it compare against the Q9550 or X3360 as I'm also looking at these.

I'm on a Q6600 B3 at the moment with a 5870 Ati card and wanted to push it a bit further with a new CPU etc

Case wise I have a Corsair 700D inbound and will be using my Noctua air cooler.

I am aware the price difference

I'm not so sure, the G0 Q6600 is a proven clocker, your going to spend more on a Q9950 and then need to hope it clocks above the Q6600 otherwise your just getting the extra L2 cache.

I think the Q6600 G0 is a free upgrade to you by the sounds of it, if your not happy you can always shift it back on since they sell easily enough on the MM, the only thing to lose is a couple of days/weeks for you to run tests, games, encoding etc to see.

I'll wait for the Q6600 G0 to turn up, see how it goes etc.

Was getting a new case too, but that's been canned due to OCUK unable to supply it :(

So instead of having a nice 700D I'm still with a pretty full Antec 300

Under intel burn I had my Q6600 B3 up to 75 - 79C in my Antec, so was looking forward to refitting it all in a nice new case and space for the Noctua HSF I have

Indeed, but I'll just have to keep my eye out for the 700D / PSU offer if it comes again.

I use the machine for:
Gaming (Crysis, GTA, APB, Grid etc.)
VMWare
General PC stuff
100GB itunes collection etc.

GFX wise I have a 5870 in there.

I went from a Q6600 at 3.5 to a Q9550 which is currently at 3.6 but I have had it over 4GHz but havent had time to get it stable yet. Sold the Q6600 for £80 and bought the Q9550 for £120 a couple months ago cos I wanted a new toy to play with and i wanted to hit 4GHz. Don't currently notice any difference in use of Q9550 except it runs cooler which means my fans are quieter.

Q6600 B3 -> Q6600 G0 if u can do it sub £10 or
Q6600 B3 -> Q9550 if u want something to play with that is more likely to reach 4GHz and runs cooler, uses less power. But that would probably cost u £50.

Based on sense Q6600 G0, based on if I could get £50 for a Q6600 B3 Q9550...

Awesome news, good luck clocking and let us know how it goes ;)

Yup will do :)

Just need to get a Corsair 700D after my wedding in August :)

Will be running it with a
Asus P5Q Pro
Corsair XMS PC6400 RAM - would like to get some PC8500
ATi 5870 gfx card

Any starting point tips? It'll be cooled by a Noctua (not the current one).

Still mulling the Corsair H50

Hi

I have seen that :(

Got 2 x 2gb at the mo and will ty and sell that. Can get 1gb sticks at ok price for pc8500, but would rather 2 x 2gb

Cheers for the settings. Need to get things out of my antec 300 as got 5 drives etc so it's a bit warm :(

Cool as I got some xms2 pc8500 4th for £50 :)

So looks like I am all set :)

Just got to sell the 6600 and RAM now! Eek it's getting expensive

Mikey, you happy with the purchase at the moment? seen any results over the Q6600?

Haven't got the bits yet, so I'm still on my B3 etc.

V v tempted to order a Corsair 700D this week as I'll have the PC in bits etc.

Even though OCUK ****ed me off with the last 700D order

Got it all installed last night into my Corsair 700D, got a few issues to work through. Hard drive vibration that I didn't have before so going to mount the offending drives in the bottom.

Sorting cables out on the back etc. as I can't put the case side on at the mo.

Got a big difference in core temps, so need to re-check the thermal compound application etc etc.

Finally I have only been able to get to 3.6GHz so far on the chip, so got to look at that tonight too.

Still need to decide whether I want to put my extra Noctua fans in the case.

Temps are about 35C Idle and 54-59 under intel burn test
