Q6600 Longevity?

I am building a system for my friend. He wants a Quad Core CPU, and I mentioned the Q6600, as its quite cheap at the moment. But he is a bit concerned about its longevity. He upgrades his main hardware every 3-4 years.

How much life is left in the Q6600, or would it be better going for the Q9450 when they are released, bearing in mind he doesn't want to spend that much on the new system.

TIA :)

I would say the price premium would not outweigh the extra cost in purchasing the newer technology, especially if the cpu is going to be kept for longer periods of time. Just get the q6600 and clock the pants of it and be happy for the next few years as software catches up.

If he's overclocking, Q6600 all the way...

There's nothing that can beat it when overclocked unless your spending hundreds more. Also assuming he wants quad core, which imo is a good idea at this point, especially if he's going to be holding onto it for a year or more.

I've just bought a Q6600 over the Q9450 because after a lot of consideration, there's not that much in it. If he wants cheap then Q6600 all the way.

What does he want to use the new system for? I went for the Q6600 due to it's prowess when video encoding/transcoding, the thing absolutely flies when doing this.

As for 3-4 years, that's a difficult one to say yay or nah on TBH.

He basically does a small bit of encoding, but mainly its for games and the Internet. He has his set his mind on a Quad Core.

He is just using an AMD 3700+ SD at the moment, so it should be a massive jump for him

When is he looking to get the new system?

Might be worth waiting till the new quads come out and see how much they are then, since there is always a premium for newly released products.

So waiting a few weeks after the release, you might see that the new quads are only a bit more then the Q6600 and they have the new sse instruction set that apparently gives a good performance boost.

The CPU will last for at least 3 years. Will it still be cool to own in three years? probably not. Most of us don't really need the hardware we actually own, it just makes us feel better :)

Yep, overclocking the Q6600 at all infact is completely unnecessary for all modern applications :)

Fact is, if the Q6600 doesn't run something at stock, overclocking it won't help the situation. I just like shiny things like a magpie. I paid £115 for a P5K premium motherboard when the basic would've done the same, but it didn't have shiny gold bits on :D
