What memory speed does a Q6600 run at as standard? therefore which memory is needed?

Also if overclocking what memory would be recommended?

At stock (266/1066mhz) the Q6600 needs a minimum of PC2-4200.

If overclocking it'll need either PC6400 (any will do) or good clocking PC5300 (such as the PC5300 Crucial Ballistix).

thanks cob - how do you work out that pc2-4200 is needed for stock

Is it 266 * 2 = 532 and pc2-4200 runs at 533 (and i guess 1066 * 2 = 2132 cpu speed)

but when you overclock you increase the 266 to higher (can you give me an example for 3ghz)

thanks

Yip 266 x 2 = 532, which is PC2-4200 memory. Ignore the 1066fsb rating that Intel gives to its chips. Just divide it by 4 to get the real FSB of the CPU.

So the Q6600 runs at 266 x 9 at stock (~2.4ghz).

For 3ghz the Q6600 would need to be running at 334 x 9, and would need PC5300 (667mhz) memory.

excellent tips mate......

i guess a q6600 is quite easy to get over 3 gigz to around 3.2 therefore thats why you recommend the 6400 memory or good overclocking 5300?

At 3.2 = 356 therefore needs memory which can hit 711?

Yeah 3ghz is easy. More than that will depend on how good your cooling is, tho the G0 chips seem to be clocking pretty well on air.

Yip 3.2ghz will need memory that can do 711mhz. A lot of PC5300 will do that, but you can get 2gb of CAS4 PC6400 for under £60 these days.

was looking and :-

This Week Only Offer
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)

800MHz RAM Speed, CAS 4-4-4-12 Timings, 1.8-2.2v VDIMM, Lifetime Warranty with Corsair.

£68.14

but the

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT12864AA663)

667MHz RAM Speed, CAS 3-3-3-12 Timings, 2.2v VDIMM, Lifetime Warranty with Crucial.
is £66.96

Is it really worth getting the cheaper 5300 crucial ballistix over the 6400 Corsair for 2quid?

Whats the advantages/disadvantages here?

Yeah. The PC5300 Ballistix is the current fav around here as it's the exact same as the PC6400 Ballistix, and is almost as good as the PC8500 Ballistix. Crucial also have the best returns service in the business (If it breaks you can post it off to Scotland and have it returned to you in a little over a week).

But then again, the Corsair will pretty much do everything that's expected of it, and will stick with a Q6600 to over 4ghz. But if you're considering the Corsair over the Ballistix, you should also look at the Geil PC6400 on offer at £59.

I bought the PC8500 to tide me over when my PC5300 Ballistix was being RMA'ed. I intended to sell it on when I received the Ballistix, but ended up keeping it and selling the unopened Ballistix instead.

I wouldn't really recommend PC8500 for a Q6600, as it's not needed. The advantage of running at the memory at 1066mhz 5-5-5-15 instead of 800mhz 4-4-4-12 is very small and is not really worth the extra money.
