I need a bit of help OC'ing my new Q6600.. Just finished building my PC delivered tonight and I cant seem to get it to the Guarenteed 3.30 GHz OCUK advertised...

I bought this..

Abit IX48-GT3 Hotfoot Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
Thermaltake VA7000BWA Shark Aluminium Full Tower
Corsair 4GB DDR3 DHX 1333C9DHX Twin3X (2x2GB) (TW3X4G1333C9DHX)
Coolermaster Real Power 620w Modular Power Supply
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.40GHz Guaranteed to run at 3.30GHZ (1466FSB) - Retail
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775)
Scythe Card Reader & Floppy Drive - Black
My old 8800GTS 640
Old SATA Drives

But when using OCUK's settings my mobo gives me an LED error of C5 which according to the book means "Call chipset hook to copy BIOS back to E000 & F000 shadow RAM"..

Which is nice but it doesnt explain much to me...

Looks like a ram issue. What speed are you running the ram at and do you have enough voltage set for the ram as by default most mobo bios do not give the ram enough.

In my case with ddr2 and a abit ip35pro I get a C1 (ram related) error unless the bios ram voltage is changed to 2.1v from its default of 1.8v. The system is fine to boot at stock with just 1.8v through the ram but if I overclock I need the proper volts for the ram setting manually

I agree, up the ram voltage to the rated. What CPU/RAM ratio are you using?

Based on my limited experience of this after my last PC did it all for me (Opteron 165 @2.8Ghz)...

I need a bit of help with this can anyone suggest the settings based on the components above as my mobo seems to allow any frequencies as its free text when entering speeds and the multiplier is 1x to 9x...?

Well 1466FSB for 3.3ghz would be 336.5 x 9 multi. Does it give you a Vcore value it is garunteed to hit 3.3ghz at?

I'd try 1.4Vcore, 336fsb, x9 multi. That should get you into windows then you can go about stress testing and volt tweaking. Someone with the above motherboard will want to chime in at this point to tell you how to do that, though now may be a good time to consult the manual?

Post your bios settings (a picture will do) and we can give you guidence. As Greebo said, starting with the right ram voltage will definitely help.

DO NOT run that RAM at 2.1V mate.

I have the same stuff in my Striker II Extreme with my Q6600 @ 3.91GHz.

Look Here:

http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/TWIN3X2048-1333C9DHX.pdf

The Stock speed is 1.6V.

Most DDR2 runs at 1.8V Stock and 2.0/ 2.1V "Optimized". Yours is DDR3.

Unless you are overclocking the RAM aswell, you shouldn't need any extra voltage at all.

Have you tried a BIOS update?

Also check the CPU and RAM ratio to make sure you are not OC'ing the nuts off the RAM.

And try the RAM in the other two slots.

:)

ok luckily im not that noobish that i upped the Volts...

I set it up at FSB 356 * 9 and RAM rate to 2:3 1068... it booted and ran fine but crashed during COD4 game... no error just reboot.

Im going to try again now with speedsterp and spread spectrum etc off.

Currently im booted with these settings.

CPU @ 356 * 9 RAM devider at 2:3 (but the BIOS calls it 1:1.50A ) making 1068.

I left everything else alone apart from turning off C1E and Vanderpool.

Whats confusing is I set the RAM speeds to the book 9-9-9-24 (no voltage change) and it doesnt post...

Also my BIOS doesnt have 2:3, 1:1, etc and its confusing me how 2 settings 1:1.50A and 1:1.50B both report RAM speed back as 1068???

If you're stable enought to get into windows at 356 X 9 and play COD4 long enough for it to crash, you need to start stress testing and upping those volts! AFAIK the 'Garunteed to overclock' Q6600s don't garuntee hitting the advertised frequency on stock volts. Infact if i remember correctly, someone posted on here a while ago having bought one of these garunteed OC chips and OCUK advised him he should run 1.5Vcore to get it stable (Don't do that for 3.3ghz, it almost certainly wont be needed) Easy way to make a few extra quid though if all you'll garunteeing is it running at 3.3ghz @ 1.5Vcore. Any Q6600 should do that! (Except the new ones, which seem to be naff)

ok at the above settings i ran everest stress test and it BSOD'd any clues? problem is if I want to change any voltages the BIOS makes me take them all off auto.

Sorry if this seems patronising (not meant as such!) but give this a very good read: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17612922

Download at least CPUZ, Prime95 and Coretemp, and make sure you know exactly what changes what when you change something! IE what does upping the NBvolts allow for? etc. Some good research into your motherboards BIOS and where to find everything would be very usefull, too :) Find out what other people have had to adjust on their Abit IX48's for stable overclocks, and how far you can push it before you'll kill it (Better to find this out from someone elses experience other than your own!).

Arm yourself with the knowledge, and have at it! :)

ok here is my BIOS detail...

This is the voltage control and as you can see there are loads of settings to change and I dont want to **** about with ones I know nothing about so what should it be?

This is my timing change screen.. the DRAM multiplier is confusing me but seems to read correct..

And this is what seems to be my advanced CPU settings for vanderpool etc...

Thos images are how I have it set when trying to run at 3.3Ghz apart from voltages are on auto but they are the same as the shot cos I have never changed them.

Keep the 'External Clock' value as it is now (356), same with the multi, and run through the 'CPU : DRAM' list untill in the brackets it says as close to "DDR3-1333" as you can get it. If in doubt, go for the value UNDER 1333, not over. That way you're not overclocking the ram at all.

Set your 'CPU Core Voltage VID' to 1.4V. Set your DDR3 Voltage to manufacturers spec. Leave everything else and see if you can boot into windows. If you can, load up CPU-Z and check that your CPU is running at 356 X 9, then load up CoreTemp and Prime95. Start prime small fft's test running. If it's not stable it's just a case of increasing the various voltages untill it is, but i don't know X48 boards or that BIOS.. So this is the bit where someone familiar with overclocking on an X48 board should chime in :D

If available, try different nb srap settings. If its anything like my board, the 1:1 A, B, C, D are the different strap settings representing fsb strap speeds. see if you have a 1:1 D available.
