Same price. E8400 overclocks higher, but only two cores. Q6600 clocks overclocks lower, but has four cores. Which will run faster at their maximum stable overclock? Best for video encoding?

Can't really decide...fastest really. Have also seen that E8400 is 45nm, and Q6600 is 65nm, will that affect things?

The quad will be much better for encoding, the 45nm will make the chip cooler but I've not had any problems with heat with my Q6600.
Hard to tell about the value, at the moment because there isn't a cheap i7 on the market the Q6600 is still doing well and keeping it's price up, but if a sub £200 i7 ~£150 chip comes out then watch the Q6600 shoot down

If your encoring application is capable of multi thread (most common ones are) then Q6600 is the way to go. It's a pretty well tested workhorse of a chip , just get one before it EOL's

Yeh I would go with the Quad for video encoding, plus I have seen some prety funky temp differences between cores on the E8400.

Probably a more sustainable choice to go with the Q6600, since you'll get the benefits of it a bit later down the line, when more Apps/Games take full advantage of Multi-cores.

you can eaisily get an E8400 to over 4Ghz wheras the Q6600 will struggle to match it, for the future choose the Q6600 but for now id still buy the E8400

Had the Q6600 shot up in price? I bought my Q6600 brand new for around £101 last september (inc. VAT). They're around £160+ now.

I think for gaming the E8400
I think for applications that process lots of data (encoding) the Q6600
