Hello gentlemen, basically with the switch to the HD 4870 from the gtx 260 ive got a bit of extra money for my rig and with a little stretching of budget ive figured out i can go for the q9450 over the q6600.
motherboard is an asus rampage and memory is corsair 6400 4GB whilst the cooler im using will be the tuniq tower.
Question is do i make the switch? The q9450 is 45nm s it'll run cooler but ive heard the multiplier is a bit of a bother when it comes to OC'ing. Sorry to bother you gents again but im tearing my hair out here trying to get as best machine as i can :)

Spend an extra few quid on PC-8000 memory, and get the Q9450 if you have the money :)

Depends how far your Corsair can overclock too, the Q9450 should be able to manage 450fsb at least depending on board, so you want ram that will do 900.
I can squeeze 490 out of my board with my Quad, so ram at 980, which my Black Dragon 6400 does no problem.
I say stick with your ram for now, see how far it will go, then if you can max it out, time for some new stuff.
Good luck with your new stuff.
But as Cob has said 8000 stuff will make sure your safe and it is cheap now, I got lucky with my ram, so no need for me to change.
Sure that Q6600 will go a lot further with better ram.

Is it CAS 4 or 5?

CAS 4 PC2-6400 may well be good enough for overclocking a Q9450, but if it's CAS 5 then I'd say it will become the limiting factor.

You can pick up 2x2gb of OCZ PC2-8000 Platinum XTC for about £60 if you shop around. Certainly worth looking out for.
