Hi. I'm looking at getting a bit more performance out of my computer. Seemingly it shouldn't be too hard, after searching on here i seem to have a good base to try an overclock. I'm not looking to set new benchmarks, just to make it a bit quicker and extend its lifespan, rather than upgrade. The problem is, i don't have a clue how to go about it

Spec is:
GeIL 4GB (4x1GB) PC5300C4 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB5300DC)
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk (66I-00788)
Antec Sonata III Piano Black Quiet Case - EarthWatts 500W PSU
Noctua NF-S12 1200RPM 120mm Silent Case Fan - 3 Pin
Asus DRW-1814BLT 18x18 DVD±RW Serial ATA Dual Layer Lightscribe ReWriter (Black) - Retail
Samsung SpinPoint T HD501LJ 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
Graphics 4850
Asus P5KC Combo Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
Its also got 140mm Noctua case fan and a Silent Knight on the CPU so cooling should be fine.

I tried the programs listed in the guides and some of the links don't work, or they just seem to monitor, confirming current clock speed of 2.4.

Can anyone help or suggest values i can enter in the bios settings(if thats what i need)??

Cheers,
Jack

that RAM will keep you at 3GHz max . . .

Change the FSB to 333 . . . may need vCore adjusting upwards but should work fine on [Auto]

done!

Intel® Core™2 Quad
  • 2.4GHz (9x266)
  • 3.0GHz (9x333)

Cheers Big.Wayne :)
I've altered FSB and northbridge to 333. It now shows 3ghz, but only when i'm doing something. Even moving the mouse will put the multiplier back to 9, but at rest it drops to 6. Is this right?

Cheers again. Will see how to behaves.

Edit: Now its running a bit quicker, any point updating the ram? Looking at the prices, it would be cheaper going to ddr3. This would presumably allow a higher overclock??

Hi P20 :)

Yup some DDR2-1066 or DDR3 would be nice as at the moment the memory is holding your "potential" overclock and a little extra performance back . . .

Also running the memory [1:1] sync isn't as good as running it on an upwards multiplier but you would need faster ram for that . . . . if you can pick up a used set of faster memory you could continue your tweaking fun . . .

Here's a graph showing you a basic idea of how the memory multiplier work . . .

So your now at 333MHz-FSB, DDR2-800 would allow you to switch up the [6:5] multi, DDR2-1066 would allow you to switch up to the [8:5] multi, this would increase the memory bandwidth and reduce the system latency . . .

You would also have the option of aiming for the 400MHz-FSB and either 3.2GHz on the CPU (8x400) or if you extra lucky and have a great processor & cooling then possibly 3.6GHz (9x400) . . . either of these could be used with the [4:3] memory multi to also have the ram running at DDR2-1066 . . .

Any of these memory multipliers can be used at any FSB, you just need to do the maths and know what your memory is capable of . . . I have some really nice DDR2 that could run stably at 600MHz (DDR2-1200) which I misex in with a 400MHz-FSB . . .

Maths:

400MHz FSB
[3:2] Memory multiplier

400 x 3 / 2 = 600 (DDR2-1200)

I've just upgraded the ram to the OCZ DDR3 10666 that is on offer, so its now clocked to 8 x 400 = 3.2ghz :D
Only thing is, when i removed the old ram, it was 6400, so 800, not the 5300 677 as i originally listed. All i can presume is overclockers sent me the wrong memory when i built it :p (i'd copied the spec from the invoice in my email account, didn't actually check)
