Hey, I was wondering if someone could help me get a stable 3.4ish overclock?

Right now I'm running @ 3.2ghz, 356x9 I wanted to push a little bit more as my temps are 30-35 under load this is my setup:

Abit IP35-Pro
OCZ PC8500 (not really sure what to do with this overclock wise)
Q6600 @3.2ghz 1.3v now.

Mem settings / timings :

DDR2 1068 @2.2v

5
5
5
15

My main problem is, if I push my CPU to 3.4 I cant manage to get a stable system without lowering the mem to below stock and I was wondering if it would be worth it? I can get it stable running the mem @ 950 / 2.2v but is it worth the extra 200mhz on the CPU?

Anyone who could give us a hand would be much appreciated, Just want to get the most out of my system, I know most of it is trial and error but id like to get the best outta my cpu/mem whilst remaining stable.

Thanks in advance!

Its better running 400 x 8 for 3.2ghz

What is the Vid of your chip, CPUZ you say. (something like 1.3250v)

Could go all out and try 400 x 9 for 3.6ghz. Is the 1.3volts in bios or when CPU is under full load? For mine to run at 1.45v under load it has to be 1.6 in bios due to vdroop/vdrop (cant remember which)

30 - 35c is very low temps for load. What cooler do you have? You should be able to get 3.6 with a voltage increase.

My Q6600 goes to 81c max under Prime95. This is fine as TJmax is on 100c so its about 70 - 75c really

my Vid is 1.2625, and I'm using a cosmos s case all fans fitted + H50-1 (push pull) but in all truth the room I'm in is always nice and cool, haha.

The core voltage ive got set is 1.330 in bios, btw this PC I bought from overclockers about 2 years ago now, only thing ive done is added fans/cpu cooler - I had to change the pre overclocked system because it became unstable when I updated my bios (I didnt know that could happen) lol, but it did - Well anyway I put the settings on they pre loaded and its fine @ 3.2ghz but I decided to lower the Voltage and do some testing and I can get it as low as 1.27 ish and remain stable - but thats only after 4hrs of prime 95 didnt do it any longer as i wanted to game haha. the previous pre clocked voltage was 1.4025v.

But ye, I wont lie I dont fully understand everything with the overclocking side of things but Ive read the guides etc and kinda get the jist of it - its when the memory comes into it I just dont know whats worth doing or not >.<

If you set to 1.50v in bios, 400 x 9 (3.6ghz) then run prime it will probably be fine. You wont have to change any memory settings doing this as it will run at stock (400mhz DDR) You might have to increase MCH (northbridge) a little.

It sounds like you have a decent chip and much better environments for it, so will probably go to near 3.8 with a bit of luck. Dont worry about the 1.50v in bios, I expect cpuz will show it as 1.4 or lower when its loaded. If it shows 1.5v when loaded then lower it a bit in bios. If it shows less than 1.4 at load then increase it in bios

Thats my prime 95 with them settings after 15 mins, the temps I recorded are fine but I got an error on 2 cores after 15 the others was fine. >< its reading as 1.460 in CPUZ btw.

I really dont understand the memory part, when I change my CPU clock, the DDR2 Ratio auto changes, I can change it myself but it seems to error if i go above 1068 but 1068 isnt an option @ 400mhz

This is my CPUZ:

Ive managed to get a stable 3.6ghz now but I had to lower my mem to (480mhz) 960, all good so far temps wont go above 52 in prime 95 atm, thanks for the help mate - after checking your link It gave me some more insight cheers :)

oh and default for 3.6ghz says DDR2 1200, I couldnt do that with my timings though. I guess if I really wanted too I could try changing everything 1 by 1 but iam happy @ 3.6 with DDR2 960 (480mhz) XD lol just a lot to take in really, I'm a novice at this if you cant tell lol.

I was not long ago. Informed by a few people on here and now i know a bit more. Maybe you could try increasing the FSB a bit more, might give you 3650 or 3700mhz and memory would be at default then

hmm intresting, ye I might try that - your a bad influance Guest2! I feel like its illegal to mess anymore with my cpu haha, thanks for all the help mate.

No worries. Thanks Diggsy for my misguided knowledge! If it breaks its not the end of the world anyway. Id recommend just keeping TJmax on 100c, then your temps will be 5-10c lower than what coretemp is reporting. Some say not to go higher than 70c but id say you should be fine upto about 85c with TJmax on 100. Above 90 i would start worrying

Just overclocking a mates Q6660, and we've managed to get it to 4ghz - was a G0 not a B3. Just working on getting it stable. Temps arn't going above 60 on full load. Will post screenies when there ready.

These are my settings for 3.6 on my Abit IP35 Pro...

External Clock - 400Mhz
Multiplier - 9x
DRAM Speed - 1:1.25 (DDR2-1000)

CPU Core Voltage - 1.52 Bios (dips to 1.45 under load)
DDR2 Voltage - 2.00
CPU VTT - 1.23
MCH 1.29

Oh and @ Guest2, as above, anywhere near 4ghz would be an astonishing clock for a Q6600. Be interested to hear what board/cooling/RAM etc was used. :)

Me too. At 1.456v load mine gets to 81c. Must be on water setup to get 4ghz out of one, and have a lot Vid to start with. Something like 1.2 or 1.25?
