Hey guys,

I’m in the process of upgrading from my sig spec atm and I’ve decided that the Q6600 is the way to go. That’s right isn’t it? Best for performance/value etc. I’m led to believe that all models/variants are clocking to at least 3 GHz on air – this is from what I’ve read on these forums; please correct me if I’m wrong!

I’m also reading that they get quite toasty when running at load? What’s the stock cooler like for a moderate O/Cing – should I be thinking about adding a 3rd party cooler to my order

Cheers,

SW.

With the E6600 a fair OC is possible on the stock cooler.

But don't even think about it on the Q6600. Unless it's a G0.
is that no to a O/C, or no to an O/C with the stock cooler :(

Cheers,

SW.

PS. How do you tell if your getting a 'G0' and what difference does it make?

Don't OC on the stock cooler, OC on aftermarket for sure.

And if your core temps read 15*C lower than they actually are, you have a G0.

Chances are, your Q6600 will turn out to be a B3. These do run a little hotter. When it arrives you could look on the CPU for the Sspec code and google it. Normally SL9xxx or something along those lines. Otherwise, drop it in your system, fire up CPU-Z and it'll tell you what revision you've got.

The Q6600's run awfully hot at stock speeds as it is. You won't be able to get much out of a B2/B3 on a stock cooler, but you may be able to get a bit more out of a G0.

If you want a G0 you will have to wait from the main etailors. The ones that got one previously (like me) where just luck tbh.

Anyway ... I've heard that the stock cooler is quite decent but I am not sure it will be good enough for overclocking.

You can try using an aftermarket cooler like the Tuniq Tower 120. It's cheaper than the Thermalright 120 Extreme. Those are the best options IMO.

sorry to hijack this thread but i was wondering at what tempertures do the Q6600 B3 suffer from thermal throttling and the highest safe temperture the CPU should be allowed to reach

85c I believe but I wouldn't want to run at that for long. You can run at 70-75c all day long but of course you will be reducing the life span of your equipment.

:D

Do you know if the 'G0' bit will be listed in the product description of the chip or will it require an email to the supplier? Also is there any approximate ETA atm? I was hopping to get this build all sorted before the release of Bioshock on the 24th :D

Thanks mate - I'll look into those! I don't intend to go mad with the O/C, but I was hoping to push it to around the 3 GHz mark :)

Lo

I run my Q6600 @ 3.4 GHz on air (AC7 Pro)
