My Q6600 is overclocked to 3.0Ghz at 1.29 vcore (load)

I'm using a thermalright ultra extreme 120 with a scythe flex 1600rpm fan blowing, and under prime my load temps are; is that too much of a difference?

I thought it was too high:( I have used the AS5 paste on it, I thought that I mounted the cooler properly. However I wasn't sure how tight to do it up. I just made the screws flush with the motherboard back plate; or do you think that it should be tighter?

Try taking it off and looking at the inprint in the TIM, if its even then the way you mounted it was fine, although I suspect its just not quite right on 1 side. Try re-applying some fresh TIM and re-mounting the cooler.
 
With ThermalRight HSFs you're just supposed to keep turning the screws till they bottom out. Did you twist the HSF a few degrees either way before securing it?
 
I did twist it a bit before mounting, and I didn't know that the screws had to bottom out; thanks for the replies.

On a side note, as I don't wish to lap the heatsink; am I right when thinking my processor will never get that hot, unless running prime, as its only stressful use would be gaming and archiving?
 
Well when my old overclock was hitting 80 degrees in Prime, it was only getting to mid 50s when running Crysis so they shouldnt get that hot know.

When maxing out all cores (maybe 3d rendering) the temps may get similar.
 
Thanks for the replies; I think then this weekend I will reseat the heatsink; see if it makes a difference.
 
I'd tighten the screws down first, could be all that's required to get the temps roughly the same across the cores.

Just as a guide my Q6600 hits 63,63,61,61 with a normal Ultra 120A HSF, if I take the side panel off the case then the temps drop a full 10 degrees with the same load so I really need to sort out the fans in my case but they are all poxy 80mm type so not a lot of options.
 
This might be the issue, I can slighty twist and move my ultra around, at the moment. I suppose that yours is rigid?
 
Mine also did the same, I ended up using 1 of those spongy washer/disks you get in a blank CD/DVD spindle and put it between the base and the mounting bracket, then bottomed the screw and turned it back a quarter of a turn.
