Q6600 - THe importance of a case side fan

Using Antec 900 with 2x120mm fans blowing across my Tuniq Tower, no overclocking just running on defaults getting around 40c on all cores with coretemp.

Ive always felt thats not real or right but cant tell ! I dont get any crashes really but perhaps aint stressed my Pc out fully. heatsink gets luke warm never hot hot.

Just checked with Intels TAT and getting 44c on core 1/

Will be testing my cpu/ram/hdds cos im still getting the odd supreme commander crashing !

having air coming in from all angles has never been the answer i dont think. decent airflow front to back is. thats why i have 3x120's in *** front, and 3x120's in the back

I dont have my antec 900s 200mm fan on ive found it does increase the temps, guess it was just a novelty idea. But I agree air flow coming directly from the front of the case (no doors/plastic to block at front) and blowing across the components and heatsink and then blowing out is better.

I dont have any fan on the back though just not required if I put my hand at the back can feel air flow coming out

Is there any CPU/RAM testing software I can use during windows ?

side fans can be odd ...

have 1 120mm Kama (3 drive bay) fan at front as intake, normal 120mm intake is open - ie no fan - so air can be sucked through, and one 120mm rear fan.

set side 120mm fan to intake .... lowered the temps but not by a huge amount

set it to expel air .. and mobo temps dropped by 6C - and CPU temp by about 4C.

the only thing I can think of is 2 things

(1) slighly negative pressure inside the case is better (you don't want any stagnent air)

(2) in-take air from the side can actually stir-up what can be quite nice air-flow - ie it creates turbulence.

just my mileage- worth a try.

I was most suprised with the mobo temp drop, as before it was actually blowing across the Northbridge - so you'd think far better than blowing out - but no !!

Nice one, I put the CPU at 9 x 311Mhz (more because it's nearly a round number at 2799Mhz, AI program is reporting 38C at the moment with myself working in Stata and Scientific Workplace and my girlfriend watching TMNT in 720p on the LCD.

Intel CPU's will throttle if they get too hot.
Seriously - don't spend so much time worrying about such things, go ahead and actually use your machine.

As somebody else in this thread has already said - don't benchmark all day.
I see post after post from some people:

Is this a good score on benchmark X?
Is this a good score on benchmark Y?
Is my temperature too hot?
Should I make the front glow blue?
My benchmark Z seems low, why?

When do you guys find the time to actually ut to use these machines.

Use your machine, if you have problems then worry about them.

While I agree with you to a point (once spent months tweaking my flight sim and downloading 100's addons without actually doing any flying), I recently spent a lot of money on a new system (one that will have to last me a few years before being upgraded) and one thing I was worried about was the temperature. The only reason for this was that I didn't want to risk damaging my new PC by it running too hot.

Looking at my temps now worries me a little, but thankfully, after reading through this forum, I can relax
