Q6600 upgrade to Q9950.... is it worth it?

Why? It will only be marginally better than the 775 and more expensive.

Same can be said for i7 :p

i5 has cheaper cpus which give 95% of the performance of equivalent i7 processor and mobos are much cheaper.

Therefore for the same money you will be able to buy a faster i5 system.

I don't see any reason to upgrade at least for now. Just overclock it and you will be fine. I got my q6600 at 3ghz on air with no problems at all!

Im still running my Q6600 for a small workstation rig overclocked to 3.6ghz and I use my E8400 @4ghz for my gaming rig.

Now I am waiting till I can afford to upgrade to i7 to make a one system does all. Only upgrade to a Q9950 if you need the extra clock speed as the Q6600 has its limitations due to heat and the Q9950 runs cooler.

As for the i5, only for gaming and I don't like the sound of the boards, limited SLI/X-fire capabilities.

But surely a 3.6GHz Q6600 would run any game at impressive frame rates anyway? And even load the maps faster if they use a scalable algorithm to decompress... anyway, yeah. Old thread and I think I have already said but, like the guy I quoted is implying - it isn't worth getting a q9550 at the moment.

In saying that thought, you can get a q9550 for £100 2nd hand so would be a very cheap upgrade.

Its worth it if your a tweaker, ive seen people go through a lot of dual core cpu's, E8*** series, i had a q6600 @3.8ghhz, got a q9550, currently at 3.8ghz, my previous quad was good enough, but i like to tweak cpu's to the max, so i got the q9550, if i can eek 4ghz from it ill be done with it, then its time for an i7 rig.
