Q6600 - V. High Temps!

When using a TRUE, note that they are made slightly convex to combat how many chips are made concave. So always lap both (i haven't, but the Zalman is pre-lapped anyway).

Also, 60C under prime is fantastic! I'm having very very strange readings with mine, under same settings i get this:

Before:

Idle: 34C
Prime: 70C

Difference between cores - 9-10C

Now:

Idle: 32-39C
Prime: 63C

Difference between cores - 12C

My room is getting warmer because of summer, but that doesn't explain wild idle fluctuations, LOWER load temps and HIGHER core difference. Wtf is this chip smoking? :)
 
V3g3tto - You have just made my day by saying that is a good result, seriously! :D

What are you using to measure your temps? I'm using core temp and have it set to show the highest core temp, dunno if maybe everyone else works out the average :p

Prime95 really does stress the PC out, all 4 cores at 100% constant is quite a demand so guess 60c really is a good result

I understand that all chips will be different, different cases/fans etc will let everyone have a different result though it seemed that everyone else was getting 30c idle to 40-50c load!

In your case i guess i would be happier with that, espcially as my PC is under load at least 80% of the time ;)
 
Those temps look loads better PaulyD

I only got 44c under load on stock, my load temps for my 3.4ghz clock are:

56c
56c
54c
54c

I also had huge differences in core temps before I fiddled like 14c etc.

The other issue to note is that its unlikely you'll ever be running an app that stresses your cpu as much as Prime95 so you should be fine.

Must get round to lapping my chip now...

TIMUH! It took me longer to find the sandpaper in my house then it did to lap the CPU :D

Gonna still fiddle with case fans, see if i can get any more improvement and it won't hurt.

One thing i just noticed is my CPU is running at 1.344 to 1.352V, isn't that a bit high?? Guess my mobo is over-volting it for the overclock as i was lazy and just did the CPU level up feature!

What voltage should it be on for a 3.0Ghz, should be able to do that on stock volts?? its g0 stepping.

Well, mine is at 1.435vcore in the bios. I got a stable 3.0ghz clock at stock volts which for my CPU is 1.325 (VID). CPU-z often reports different volts than the bios does.

Even at 1.435volts my cores are all 35c or below on idle so don't be concerened about putting more juice through the chip, as long as the temps look ok it'll be fine I'm sure.

EDIT: I didn't use Uguru for clocking by the way, I did it all in the bios.
 
Hi all,

Thought i would give an update after some more testing and bits.

Although i was getting good results i still wasn't 100% happy so here is what happened:

After previous attempts i left it and tried different overclocking settings. I found out i could hit 3.6Ghz with 1.4Vcore - not bad. Had to have my fan running 100% which started to annoy me so went for slightly less.

After testing i was happy with 3.0Ghz at 1.2625 Vcore, temps were a lot lower and still a nice overclock to have (considering the power of the chip and i had jumped from a AMD 64 X2 4400+ at 2.6Ghz with DDR RAM!)

This morning i decided to lap the chip and heatsink properly, i had done it roughly before but not to the full extent, laziness and wanting instant results on my part for that.

This time i got the CPU down to all copper (there was some nickel left before) and smoothed it, lapped the headsink down a bit as well and got that smoother. Put the PC back together and all of my cores were now more even, 44,42,39,39. Went to Prime it to see load temps and cores 3 and 4 shot up to 65+!?!?!

Opened the case and moved the heatsink - cores 3 and 4 instantly shot up to 75c. Shutdown and pulled it to bits - reason was the heatsink had not sat correctly BIG TIP TO EVERYONE who has hot temps check this first! Been said a million times before and i was sure it was down ok but it wasn't...so double check!

Now on idle im currently on 43,37,36,34 - down a few temps for me on idle at 3.0Ghz. I ran Prime Small FFT Test and after 10 mins with no errors my temps are: 57,55,54,52 - a lot better :)

Moral of the story: you can reduce the temps quite significantly by checking, double checking, tinkering and then lapping :D
