Q6600 vs E8500

I've definitely settled on the Q6600 (the low power edition, thankyou)
Low power edition hehe! :D

Good luck m8, may your journey of discovery be a good one! :)

Thanks for the charts! :) I've seen quite a few comparisons and a lot of people have said the same thing. On standard settings the 8500 beats the quad, but there are a few things to note:

1) When you overclock the quad, you get the extra speed x4, not x2.
2) It's 2 freaking fps, without overclocking. Looks like a lot on the chart, but really, it's 2fps.

I think I can sacrifice 2fps on Crysis for 2 whole other cores that, when confronted with a game with proper threading, will beat the dual core.

Whats the actual difference in wattage between the two then.

Nm i looked on google and a e8500 uses around 65w and the Q6600 is rated around 95w.

I would much rather have a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 running at 3.4 - 3.6GHz than a Dual Core Wolfdale processor running at 4GHz because their will probably be very little difference in terms of performance in games.
Really Fire Wizard?

Have you any idea how many watts an overclocked Q6600 eats at full load when running at 3600MHz?

watts = kWh = Money £££

Luckily, I have a job. I also spend more time enjoying games than hugging trees, so I think I'll be ok.

Do you have some environmental issue your trying to push or do you just enjoy arguing?

well fast duel is better for games and uses less power which makes it cheaper in the long run. i would use a Q6600 if it was free maybe but def wouldnt pay much for one.

Ive used both my q6600 @3.6ghz and my bro in laws e8500 based rig, @4.0ghz (which is virtually identical to the rest of my setup) for games and couldnt really notice much difference. Regarding the power used by the quad, i dont run it at 3.6 all the time, have a few overclocked profiles saved in the bios (3.0ghz and 3.6ghz) most of the time its running at stock, but its easy to load a different profile if i need a bit more oomph for gaming or benching.

Hello Big.Wayne, I do indeed realise that the amount of power that an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 pulls running at 3.6GHz is a fair bit. Now, since I have purchased a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, my mum and dad haven't complained to me that their bills have sky rocketed up. I'm happy and their happy. :p:D

The difference over a year to electric cost's would be minimal.:p

To the OP Q6600 is a good chip, but a 9550 although more expensive might be a better bet

Agree and I keep toying with the idea of jumping upto to one of them! More cache, 45nm goodness and higher overclock

Plus I want to keep my 4 cores rather than go for 2 :)

I've ordered my Q6600, hopefully it'll arrive today (along with the rest of the pc)! I would have gone with the 9550 in a heartbeat, but I was on a pretty strict budget and it would have blown the rest of my pricing out of the water.

I can always upgrade later! :D

:) good luck with the build, just hope you don't get a bad q6600 :( the newer batch aren't as easily o/c'd as the ones 4-5 months ago.

this is simple - i have a quad for editing and encoding hd video
i also play games

if i didnt do that and only used my pc for games i would have an E8XXX chip

if it wansnt for the vid editing - i wouldnt even come close to using my quad to its full potential

LOL what on earth are you gabbing on about? :D

The price increase will be minimal to say the least.
