would it be worth a upgrade from my E6600 to a Q6600 for mainly games.
all i do really is listen to music on my pc and play games every now and then.
mainly chatting on msn

ok iv just allmost awnserd my own question by thinking what i really do on my pc which is mainly msn

na but, how much performance would there be on a stock speed Q6600 over my E6600 at 3.6ghz?

thanks

oh and how well do the Q6600's clock and how much more heat do they throw out over the E6600? thanks

I fell into that trap with the QX6700 m8,for one they throw out a hell of a lot of heat so they really need to be watercooled and dont clock that well, and you will never need all them core`s to play game`s,stick with what you have. :)

I went from E6600 to Q6600, kind of wish i didn't now since it runs so hot even after lapping it and not being able to run it as fast as the e6600 due to the temps is a bit of a bummer.

For the kind of tasks you use your PC for, I can't say it will be worth the upgrade at all. The Q6600 is a great CPU but it will be no use in games for a little while yet. If on the other hand you wish to multi task heavily or use 3d content creation packages, then a quad core is very advantageous.

I didn't dig quad core at 670 quid.Although I did love the performance with video editing and encoding DV etc..

But with a 6600 for £150 and xeon quad core for £260,considering the perfoamnce gains in certain tasks it makes the 6600 look expensive by comparison.

are these xeons just the same as the normal quad core ones?

or are they totally different cause i thaught they was built for servers

"apparantly" better quality silicon for 24x7 usage. And the new G-0 (?) revision should have lower voltages and TDP (hopefully for better overclocking).

ah cool.

hmmmm im kinda tempted.

my situation is: i have 500 pounds right now saved for a R600 or what ever is the next best graphics card within 1 months time.

i might be able to get 550 pounds by then.

and if i sold my E6600 i could get my total to 620 pounds ish right now.

but - 287 (cheapest xeon) = 333 pounds or - 364 (Q6600) = 256pounds and then id not have enough for a top of the range graphics card :(

hmmmmmmmm, dno what to do.

why do you need all that processing power or graphics power?

by looking at your current specs, you shouldnt need to upgrad your graphics card for at least 6 months and your processor maybe 2 years

iv had this graphics card for about 2 years now, it cant handle half the things i want it to do.

IE if i try 8x AA and super sampling on somthing low requirement like bf2 fps drops below 60.

id really want a top of the range card because i do a lot of video editing aswell, and game recording using fraps etc stuff like that.

oh and i play a lot of games like oblivion and armed assault and a 7800gtx just cant handle it at 1680x1050 resolution at 4xaa 16xa at more than 35fps.

Any card will do for this.

But you are right your card is old in GFX terms now.

You will love the quad with editing mate.

Enjoy it! ;)

you could sell your current cpu and your current graphics card on ebay £100 for 7800GTX and £140 for your e6600 since its a good clocker, you could then easily afford both upgrades, but like i said why dont you wait 6 months by then graphics card prices will of halved. your card should last you for another 6 months, 8 x aa is not needed thats just overkill, and just try a little lower settings but 35fps is faster than some xbox 360 games allow, as for the cpu quad cores consome a lot of power and run really hot, wont overclock much past 3ghz unless your going for watercooling, and the extra cores will never get used efficiently, so your current cpu should last you another 2 years i reckon

unless all you do is crunch video a dual core will do the job, if you were doing serious amounts of important encoding then i'd grab the xeon quad.

they dump an insane amount of heat if you wish to clock btw, something else to consider.

for most ppl a c2d @ 3.2ghz+ is plenty of power, the quad won't do anything for you're gaming right now.

ok thanks, i guess ill stick to my E6600 till the ddr3 and 45nm cpu's etc are available and down to the same prices as a ddr2 conroe setup is befor i upgrade :) alltho im going to get a new graphics card tho still because im coming up to the final 7 months of my life befor i have to start work so i want to enjoy it with a half decent card
