Ive just installed this CPU into an Asrock 4Core Dual Sata motherboard and im looking for some advice. Everything seemd to go ok but when i checked with CPU-Z it says
Intel 2Core Quad Q6600
but in the the bottom window it says Core 1 Threads 1
Ive seen some screen shots of CPU-Z identifying Q6600 as Core 4 and Threads 4
Can anyone point out what i seem to have done wrong. or have i got a faulty cpu. The bios is showing it as a quad core.

Open Device Manager, expand the Computer option, and check to see whether you have 'ACPI Uniprocessor PC' or 'ACPI Multiprocessor PC' listed.

If it's the former, then right-click on it and select Update Driver. Pick 'Install from a list or specific location', then 'Don't search I will choose the driver to install'. Hopefully you will have the choice of ACPI Multiprocessor PC. Of so then select it, exit and reboot.

Hi I've opened task manager and done exactly as suggested it rebooted but when i open task manager it still is showing only one graph. I also have installed vista and its showing exactly the same. I have flashed to the latest Bios for asrock website but its reporting that its a quad core q6600 but not performing like on. Any more help anyone. Many thanks in advance

I'm not 100% sure, but check the bios, there's an option to limit the number of cores. Make sure that setting is set

Hi There doesnt seem to be any options in the bios that relates to CPU. On the main screen the only option for adjustment is the time and date. All the other options are set to either default or auto. Do you think that i have a faulty CPU even though its reporting Q660o Quad or could it be the new asrock motherboard. Ive never scrimped on my PC but money's tight at the moment so i went for the cheaper option so i could keep my x1950 and corsair memory but it looks like it might have been a false economy. Anyway if anyone can help it'd be really appreciated.

I think your cpu is fine.

1) download this and run torture test, see if it tests all 4 cores P95V253
2) You could install windows again.

Ive already re-installed vista and i re-installed xp on another drive last night but they are both showing the same Q6600 but not 4 core or 4 threads. I did notice that Vista was very fast to load this morning i dont know if that is a good sign or not.

Hi again Servo
Ive just started speedfan and this is saying
temp 1 32
temp 2 30
Core 0 19
Ive enbaled the bios setting and saved but it still the same. Prime test shows that it completed xxx iterations with no errors but i couldn't see anywhere that said test core 1/2/3/4

try coretemp and see if that shows all four cores. I'm sure your cpu is fine, and won't need taking out.

You are using sp2 on xp?

And set that option in bios back to auto/disable

This is really strange. Ive just run coretemp and it says number of cores 4
but in the lower main box it says
core 0 34 co state
core 1
core 2
core 3 are all blank

Don't remove the cpu.... If it was not installed correctly the computer would not boot. It sounds like a bios problem to me. Try

1) Go in to Bios
2) Go to CPU configuration
3) Make sure 'Max CPUID Value Limit' is set to DISABLED

See if that helps... Failing that try a bios upgrade and resetting the bios to performance defaults
