Q6600

I really appreciate everyones help. I've reset the bios Max CPUID to disabled and loaded optimal settings but ,you've guessed right, it's still the same. I've tried this on a clean install of Vista and XP pro SP2(not all the suggestions as im on my vista drive) Ive updated the bios to 1.80 and still no joy. I think this is going to be one of those weekends when my mrs hates computers.

Ive only installed the VIA 4 in 1 drivers that came with the motherboard. I'll see if there are any updates as this motherboard shipped with an old bios.

Ive just downloaded the latest drivers from asrock and they're the same as on the installation disc. I wish i hadn't started this upgrade. I've gone from a rock solid Skt A XP2500M @2.4Ghz to a quad Q6600 thats running 1 core at 2.3Ghz hehehe. I even contatced Asrock before i bought and gave them details of what i intended doing and they said that everything would be ok. What do you think my options are

After you loaded the optimal bios settings did CPUID come back to being enabled? Just a thought.

Unfortunately i'm still using DDR and AGP. I only bought the card X1950Pro about 3 months ago and i bought 2 Gb of corsair DDR XMS. I was just trying to upgrade in increments. Where would you think the issue would be CPU or motherboard. Ive just tried to contact Asrock but theyre not in because of Chinese New year. Im going to re-install XP pro but if anyone has any other suggestions i'll be very grateful.

To pre1twa
Once i've re-installed i'll check

I wish I could help more, but there's nothing more I can think of. I remember one Asrock board I had on a core2duo, would only work with a pcie card in.

Many thanks Servo for all your effort. I just knew i should've bought Asus. I know i'm covering old ground but if you where to choose would you say CPu fault or motherboard/BIOS

I would go for the motherboard, I've never seen anyone with the same problem, report back that it was the cpu.

I've finally cracked it. When Cob asked to select ACPI multiprocessor it wasnt in the list. So i went with the Advanced Configuration option not realising what this meant. So i re-installed and saw that the multiprocessor option was back in the list.I followed Cob's instructions and its worked. Many many thanks to all who've helped me out last night and today.

Thanks

REALLY suprised that a fresh install of XP did not automatically get things up and running the way they should be. Did you update with SP2?

Anyway good news that you solved the problem :)
