Which one of these would be easier to hit, and run cooler??

1) A Q6600 with 8*multiplier at 400MHz (3.2GHz with a 1600MHz FSB [for 1:1 running with my memory])

OR

2) A Q6600 with 9*multiplier at 400MHz (3.6GHz with a 1600MHz FSB, again 1:1 memory running?)

Will my current AC Pro 7 be able to handle either option??

What q6600 is it? A B3 or 'energy efficient' G0?

If it's the latter then 3.6 may be on the cards if you were very lucky. If it's a B3 i'd say you'd be pretty much limited to 3.2ghz.

I ran a B3 for a while under an Ultra 120 Extreme @ 3ghz on 1.36v and had load temps around 65-68c.

Pretty much see what you manage with the temps you are happiest with - it's difficult to predict as all chips are different.

Right, well i will be getting the G0 stepping. Was gonna wait for Q9450 but cba, and feel that an OC 6600 will be just as good.

Like you say, i'll try and see waht happens?

Also, will 2GB RAM be a bottleneck on the rest of my system, and would you recommend a PSU upgrade if i change the cpu and memory, and install a TV tuner??

Well what PSU do you have now and what is your spec also what do you plan to upgrade to?

In terms of speed as you point out a PC6400 RAM will run sync with 1600FSB so no it won't bottleneck, most PC6400 kits will do a little further than 800Mhz anyway. But 2Gb may be a bit lacking if you're on Vista

Yeah the AC7Pro isn't up to the job. I couldn't get mine stable once over 3gig on the Q6600 and upgraded to a Tuniq Tower 120 which is literally twice the size and only £30

So how about as an alternative, as i don't really have the space for a bigger cooler, an E8400 or an E8500!!

I plan to play games, but don't want to have to upgrade for a while, you reckon a Wolfdale will provide years of longlasting service???

Or alternatively, at least a good two years without having to upgrade?

Sorry to hijack this thread, but a quick question to Stonedofmoo; how much better are your temps?? as I have just done the same and also got a TT on way.

Right, the only peripherals i would have, are speakers, a USB stick now and again, and a cycling novelty mouse :D - which is unfortunately not compatible with a x64 system. :(

I might upgrade my psu later, just wanted to know if i would HAVE to upgrade it now.

I found the temps were 12-15 degrees lower. I run the fan at 1300rpm which is silent compared to the AC7 Pro's noisy 2300rpm.
