Q6600

I've not upgraded my processor on its own for years, because by the time I need to upgrade the socket and memory is no longer current and I end up having to buy a new processor, motherboard and memory to match anyway.

You should. I bought a Q6600 for £75 and sold my E6750 for £51.

Bargainous upgrade imo!

yeah buy q6600 and sell your old cpu.
I play Starcraft 2 on max settings fine with my q6600.
at the moment, the only games i struggle with is metro 2033 (the new crysis...) and mafia 2 (i play mafia 2 on full settings and it boggs down sometimes but not enough to make me lower any settings).

so +1 on Tims post :)

A Q6600 is still a great cpu, i had one at 3.8ghz, went through anything i used with ease, swapped it out for a q9550, also at 3.8ghz, i should have stuck with the q6600, yes, it ran a bit hot, needed a lot of volts to oc it, but it was a great chip, i really enjoyed overclocking it as it took a lot of time and effort. I currently have an i7 at 4ghz, but that was too easy to overclock, kinda miss the challenge tbh.

SO you have 400 for a MB CPU and Ram

Both would last you a few years buy the AMD option will prob offer better upgrade potential and Intel are changeing there sockets soon.

I'm still using a Q6600 on a p45 gigabyte board (at 3.60ghz), so far I've not really needed to upgrade. I put a 460gtx in not long ago and it runs just about everything smoothly.

I'm probably going to sit on it and upgrade when the next gen of CPUs comes out in a few months. I don't think it's worth me spending about £500 on i7 kit now which is already about 2 years old :)
