Q6660 large range in core temperatures.

I have just popped my Q6600 into my eVGA 680i board and fired up Core temp.

Everything is at stock, the temperature of Core 1 and 2 is 37'C but the temperature of Core 3 and 4 is 31'C.

Now I know that all for temperature readings should not be identical but a differance of 6'C seems too much to me.

The CPU is cooled via the Swiftech Apex Ulta Kit.
 
This is down to how they are made, which as you know is by putting 2 core2 duos together.

There are two voltage planes within the CPU as a result, and just like you get variation in temps at a given voltage amongst core2's, you get the same with quads.

What do the temps do under load?
 
perfectly normal.

I'm running a G0 stepping model.

When I started meddling about the cores were about 8 to 10 degrees out.

The best I can get to stabilising the 4 cores under load is a differential of about 5 degrees

At Idle it's about 4 degrees.

I'm using a Swiftech Apogee GTX waterblock . Both the block and the CPU IHS have been lapped.

I've had to modify the retaining mechanism for the waterblock to get the differential so low. Rather than just screwing the block to the motherboard I've taken some stiff springs and fittings from an old Asetek waterblock and used them to give me more control over where I apply pressure on the Swiftech Apogee.
 
If I'm honest it hasn't made a huge difference in the overall temps other than minimising the differential.

It did get the hottest core by a couple of degrees

It became more of a challenge to see how close I could get them.
 
Just couldn't leave it alone. Yet another reseat and this time with a speed tweak also, now up to 3520. 440 X 8 @ 1.375V in BIOS.

Wonder how long it'll do SETI stable.

This is what I was on about earlier with the revised mounting for the waterblock. The big nuts are being used for spacers. I had to drill 6.5mm holes in the corners to fit the Asetek rods.
