im gonna be getting a new cpu in the comin works but im still undecided on what to pick, ive narrowed it down to either a;
Q6700 or E8400,

what do people suggest?

theres about 1,000,000 posts about this sort of thing if you have a search around. Really it somes down to what you use your pc for. If it's gaming, get the 8400. If you do a lot pf photoshop, dvd encoding ect then get the quad.

e8400 is a brilliant price for what it does. no point in getting e8500/e8600 because all they have is a bit extra clock speed which isnt worth the jump in price.

Go with the Quad, in the games that do not use all the cores you will hardly notice the difference and you will be setup for the newer games that are making use of more than 2 cores.

With the current prices now compared from the both of them, I personally would go for the Q6700. It is a great steal at that price, and the extra cash there can be added onto a decent CPU cooler.

Whilst the E8400 may overclock better and is the easiest choice if you just want to have a gaming PC, the Q6700 is still great for that and other things when you need it.

Besides, both chips should clock to the 3.4Ghz or above mark easily which is plenty enough for games currently out now, especially if you have a decent GPU to go with them.

If primarily gaming go for the E8400, if you do any video encoding go for an intel quad, not the q6700 as its a terrible clocking chip, (if your gonna overclock) perhaps a q6600, which is a bit old now, or a newer q9550/9650.

ya im sticking to the Q6700, i dont care about o/c the thing and i dont play pc games just so long as it runs sweet as its all gravy.

if you even have to ask this question then your better off with a dual core since those who have knowledge about computer hardware wont even put up a thread and just go out and buy the quad.

There are literally 6 bazillion threads on this topic, and the search function is both easily accessible and effective...to be fair.....but personally I'd go for the quad.

get off ya high horse, i wanted peoples opinons, is there anything wrong with that?

I think he means, if you don't KNOW that you NEED (or want) a quad, then you are better off with the dual core. I too would go with this statement, BUT, since you said you aren't overclocking, I would go for the quad. The wolfdales are brilliant overclockers, but if you don't overclock them, you might as well go for the quad.

if you don't OC go for e8400 with higher stock clock speed. q6700 2.6 ghz on an old quad is a waste of cash unless you get it for cheap second hand and OC it! most apps you will encounter will use the single core anyway and benefit fromn the higher clock. no way a 2/3 year old 65nm quad is future proof anyway.

if you don't know about OC, you will run slower and w/ higher temps w/ q6700.
