Q9400 causes my computer to freeze

Hello

I've recently swapped my E8400 to a Q9400 but since the upgrade my computer has been freezing, in an apparently random fashion, forcing me to restart.

I have not overclocked the processor.

I thought it might be a problem with my power supply but it has frozen when the computer is idle. I can play Crysis for at least an hour with no freezing.

Voltages seem fine, as do temperatures. (35 idle, <60 stressed)

The computer is also stable when I stress test with Prime95. Memtest86+ finds to errors with my memory. My BIOS is updated to the latest version.

My specs:
Q9400
Asus P5N-D
4GB 800 MHz OCZ RAM
BFG GTX 260 OC (196 sp)
550 W PSU.

Could the processor be faulty or is there some other problem?

Thanks for your help.

Might be a fault but i'd possibly see if it needs a bios update?

Check what bios you have now then visit the ASUS site for CPU compatibility and what bios change (if any) you need.

Thanks for the reply. The latest bios version is 1401 (June 2010) and that's the version I'm running.

Support for the Q9400 was added in version 0701.

the best way to check where the error is occuring is to test each and every component of your pc.
For example, boot the system without a stick of ram and then repeat it whith the other stick (ie running only one ram stick at a time)
and another one... if u have a spare graphic card , try that too. ( or if you have integrated one)
if you still have the other cpu then try testing your system with it too.

And if this doesnt work that the only way is to replace the cpu or go and sell it to the same vendor from which you originally purchased.

Hope this helps!

I've tried this before posting and everything was working fine when I moved back to the old processor. It still froze if the Q9400 was installed with all the combinations of ram/graphics.

is your power supply a decent one? Have you tried clearing the cmos to reset everything

I have an Antec truepower PSU.

I'll try resetting the CMOS, thanks.
