hi all, just got my 9450 yesterday and stuck it in my rig. managed to clock it to 3.6GHz stable, but, alarmingly in bios my cpu temp is hitting 51oC!!! bearing in mind this is under water, i made sure the thumb screws on my apogee gtz were finger tight, and it had a healthy dollop of AS-5 on it (i did a cross with thin lines of it). vcore is at 1.36v in bios, LLC off, nb volts @ 1.43, fsb term at 1.23v.

anyone reckon i've got dodgy temp sensors or could it be something else? haven't reinstalled vista yet so can't check with realtemp/coretemp etc.

cheers

that's idle, like i say this was just sitting in bios i noticed this temp... once i've got windows reinstalled (such a pain in the ass changing chip and having to do this... grrr) i'll see what load temps are like.

but surely, this is a ridiculously high temp for idle :S

i saw that vid someone posted a few days ago about applying tim, the best spread was given by the X style, but to reduce the amount i put on i did a thin line with 2 small dots either side to get a more even spread. i took the block off again, to check the spread, and it was nice and even, and thin. i cleaned it off and reapplied exactly with a tiny bit less TIM the same and stuck the block back on but no change... might get some mx-3 and see how that fairs.

out of interest, what's the shelf life of AS-5? i've had mine for nearly a year and am wondering if it could have gone off?

Shelf-life is a good few years.

What's the load temp? The system will cut out before it gets too hot anyway.

still haven't got round to find my vista disk, which is quite irksome, so as of yet i haven't been able to test load temps. hopefully i can get it reinstalled before i go to uni tomorrow, don't have to be in til 3 but the effort of getting up before 2 is hard work :D

Use a Linux distro of some sort? Just a small one so it doesn't take long to download...

What is your watercooling loop, what's running through it and when did you last clean it out?

2 of my mates have just bought Q9450's last week and have the same problem with stuck sensors, they idle at 51-55c and load temps are around 60-65c under prime 95 load.

If you google "Q9450 high temps" it will bring up loads of problems regarding temp sensor problems with these chips.

good shout on the linux, will give that a go defo :)

my loop currently consists of (loop order is the same as mentioned here): laing vario d5, thermochill pa 120.3, ek supreme gpu block, apogee gtz, ek supreme gpu (primary gpu), xspc dual bayres, uv purple feser, 1/2" xspc hose, anti kink coils.

i'm going to do a separate loop for cpu only in the next few days, with a 120.1, with a laing ddc 18w/xspc res top, 1/2" hose, uv orange feser+anti kinks, so hoping that'll help.

the loop is about 4/5 months old, also hasn't been flushed yet (will happen this week due to installing the second loop).

Have you set the correct TJMAX in HWMonitor?

i've not gone into windows if this is what you mean, but not familiar with this? is it something i can alter in bios?

just had a look and this does seem quite possibly the answer. i've got a scythe kaze master ace fan controller, but i've misplaced the temperature probes, will get one of those on the block if i can when i find them and verify that this is the case.

many thanks for all your responses, i shall report back tomorrow when i've got windows/linux installed, and if i manage to find the temp probes :)

once again, cheers

Bit strange, my EO q9550 idled at 32-32-27-27. loaded at 56-54-46-47 on pretty average air cooling.

Both are running at stock speeds with low volts, one is using a Corsair H50 with push/pull fans & the other is using a Noctua U12P with push/pull fans.So cooling doesn't seem to be a problem as the Noctua used to be fitted to my overclocked i7 which used to run at 36-38 idle & 63-68 load.

managed to find my vista disk, repaired my current install and everything is running ok :)

ran prime small FFT's for an hour this morning, all seems stable, temps hit low 70's according to everest, i made an adjustment in hardware monitor in rivatuner so idle temps show as mid 30's, hit about 55oC on average per core with the adjustment. Now i just need to find my temp probes to get a slightly more accurate reading :)
